Chapter 4

The medium wide shot framed the immediate, terrifying shift in the room's atmosphere. The bright, airy colors of the dining hall felt suddenly charged with an explosive, high-voltage tension. The clean whites of the table linens and the polished highlights of the silver cutlery shimmered beneath the warm golden light, a stark contrast to the dark, heartbreaking reality of the two women approaching the head table.
Lila navigated the maze of polished walnut tables and champagne velvet chairs, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She guided Eleanor directly to the space beside Bastian’s chair. The elderly woman kept her eyes firmly fixed on the floor, deeply humiliated by her appearance in front of the syndicate's elite.
With meticulous, gentle care, Lila steadied a silver serving tray in her left hand. She placed her right hand supportively on the small of Eleanor's back.
Eleanor, her frail fingers trembling violently, reached out. She carefully placed Bastian’s empty dinner plate onto the silver tray Lila held. The older woman kept her eyes lowered the entire time, desperately trying to hide the shaking of her wet, red hands and the dampness of her cardigan sleeves from her powerful son. She was terrified that Colette would fulfill her promise and banish her forever.
Bastian did not move his powerful shoulders. He simply stared at the scene unfolding before him, his heavily tattooed hands resting completely still on the table. The generous spacing of his ink was clearly visible under the warm, golden chandelier light.
His cold, perceptive eyes tracked every microscopic detail. He noticed the plain, stained work apron tied awkwardly over his mother's modest floral dress. He noticed the dark, damp patches soaking the sleeves of her soft cardigan, smelling faintly of industrial dish soap. He saw the sheer, unadulterated terror radiating from the woman who had given him life.
Across the table, Colette swallowed hard, sinking her manicured nails into the palms of her hands. She forced herself to project an aura of complete, unbothered calm, though her heart was racing. She needed to immediately reassert her control and paint the situation as a trivial, harmless eccentricity of an aging mind.
Bastian slowly turned his head. The loose strands of thick, slightly wavy hair falling over his forehead cast no shadows in the bright, luminous room. He shifted his cold, terrifyingly perceptive gaze away from his mother's trembling hands and looked directly into Lila’s eyes.
Lila held his intense, unyielding stare. She saw the deeply masculine, lethal power radiating from him, but beneath the cold exterior, she recognized a fierce, unyielding demand for the truth.
Bastian spoke quietly. His deep, low voice rolled through the room, carrying a lethal, acoustic weight that vibrated through the polished floors.
“Lila. Why is Mom serving?”

The question dropped into the room like a heavy stone. There was a deliberate, terrifying pause placed perfectly after the housemaid's name, demanding absolute submission.
Every single guest at the massive, crowded table stopped eating and speaking. The melodic hum of polite, American-accented conversations died completely. Men in expensive formal wear and women in satin gowns turned their heads in unison, their fair, rosy faces locking onto the head of the table. The silence was absolute, heavy with the terrifying realization that the apex predator of their world had just halted his own engagement dinner.
