Chapter 1

The evening dinner inside the Ravenshaw mansion was a breathtaking display of orchestrated perfection, a gilded cage designed to house the most dangerous predators on the eastern seaboard. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted ceilings, their countless teardrop prisms casting a soft, elegant golden light across the grand dining hall. The generous illumination danced across carved ivory wall panels and intricate gilded moldings, reflecting endlessly in the towering antique mirrors. At the far end of the room, a massive carved marble fireplace housed a roaring blaze that chased away the autumn chill. Tall, slender candles burned steadily inside heavy silver candelabras, their flickering flames casting warm highlights over pristine arrangements of white roses, gold-rimmed porcelain, and sparkling crystal stemware. The polished walnut tables were surrounded by plush champagne velvet chairs, each occupied by the elite members of the American underworld, their fair, rosy skin glowing with health and untouchable privilege.

At the absolute center of this radiant atmosphere sat Bastian Ravenshaw. At forty-five, the Mafia boss possessed a movie-star-handsome masculinity that commanded immediate, suffocating submission. His broad, powerful shoulders effortlessly filled out a meticulously tailored dark three-piece suit. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell casually over his forehead, offering a deceptive softness to his otherwise cold, perceptive eyes. Refined artistic tattoos crept across his hands and fingers with generous spacing, matching a small, intricate neck tattoo visible just above his crisp white collar. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand, catching the golden light alongside his luxury wristwatch and polished leather shoes.

"The perimeter is entirely secured, Mr. Ravenshaw," a senior capo murmured, leaning respectfully toward the head table. "We expect no interruptions from the rival syndicates tonight."

Bastian slowly turned the heavy signet ring on his finger, his dark eyes scanning the room. His deep, low voice rolled through the immediate space, marked by controlled, measured pauses that demanded absolute attention.

"Are you entirely certain of your men, Thomas?"

His dialogue consisted exclusively of questions, a known, chilling rule of the formidable boss that forced the listener into a constant state of anxious defense.

"Absolutely certain, sir," Thomas replied quickly, his American accent clipping with nervous energy as his rosy cheeks flushed slightly. "The estate is locked down tight."

"Have you considered that the greatest threats often sit inside the walls, rather than outside them?" Bastian inquired, his gaze sweeping over the crystal glasses before settling on the woman seated directly opposite him.

Colette Voss offered a dazzling, carefully reassuring public smile. At thirty-three, Bastian’s fiancée was a vision of sculpted aristocratic privilege in a stunning burgundy silk gown that clung flawlessly to her slender frame. Diamond earrings flashed brilliantly against her fair skin, perfectly matching the massive engagement ring on her left hand.

"You are much too cynical for such a beautiful evening, darling," Colette laughed smoothly, her elegant manners on full display as she reached for her champagne flute. "Everyone here is entirely captivated by our hospitality. We are projecting the perfect image of a united family."

"Is a united family merely a theatrical performance we stage for our guests, Colette?" Bastian asked softly, his cold eyes unblinking as he watched a flicker of irritation cross her flawless features.
