Chapter 2

The harsh splash of the murky rinse water hitting the marble floor was a startling sound, but it was quickly drowned out by the sudden, heavy silence that rippled through the immediate vicinity of the gallery. The sophisticated hum of American accents faltered.

From the shadows of the arched VIP entryway, Roland Ashcroft stepped into the brilliant, natural light. At forty-six years old, the Mafia boss and sole sponsor of the exhibition was devastatingly handsome, possessing a rugged, movie-star quality that commanded absolute authority. He was deeply masculine and distinctly Mafia Boss-like. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was naturally slicked back, with a few loose strands falling perfectly over his forehead, giving him a charming, romantic look that masked his true nature. He possessed an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline framed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble.

He wore a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit, a heavy family signet ring, an expensive wristwatch, and polished leather shoes that made no sound as he approached. As he stepped into the neutral white lighting, the crisp illumination highlighted the artistic tattoos resting on his hands and fingers. The ink featured refined, sharp designs with enough negative space so they didn't look too dense, leading up to a small, highly artistic tattoo visible on his neck above his unbuttoned collar.

Roland’s cold, sharp, intimidating eyes instantly assessed the scene. He stepped silently beside Mavis, looking down at the young housemaid kneeling in the dirty water. He noticed the torn charcoal sketch resting at Mavis’s wet feet.

"What is the meaning of this disruption?" Roland asked. He spoke slowly, with controlled, deliberate pauses between his words. He kept his volume incredibly low, yet every single sentence sounded measured, cold, and immensely dangerous.

"Roland, darling," Camellia gasped, her fair skin paling slightly as she quickly plastered on a bright, artificial smile. "It is nothing. The maid simply spilled the rinse water and ruined some of the display materials. I was just reprimanding her."

Roland did not look at his fiancée. He slowly crouched down, the fine fabric of his tailored suit stretching tight across his broad shoulders. He reached out with his tattooed hand and gently picked up the two torn halves of the charcoal sketch. He held them together, his cold eyes studying the intricate, flawless lines of his own face rendered in the charcoal.

He looked from the delicate sketch in his hands up to the matching, massive painted portrait hanging on the gallery wall. The strokes, the shading, the undeniable emotional depth—they were utterly identical in technique.

"This is not a display material," Roland murmured, his raspy, authoritative voice sending a chill through the air. "This is a masterwork."

"Roland, please, put that filthy paper down," Camellia urged, stepping closer, her diamond heels clicking nervously. "She stole that from my private studio. She is a thief."

Roland ignored Camellia entirely. He shifted his intimidating gaze downward, meeting Mavis’s wide, tearful eyes. The young woman’s fair, rosy cheeks were stained with tears, her white lace headband slightly askew. She trembled beneath his intense, calculating scrutiny.

"Mavis," Roland said, his voice dropping into a low, intent register that forced everyone nearby to hold their breath. "You painted my portrait?"

Mavis looked at the terrifying Mafia boss, her breath hitching in her chest. She glanced nervously at Camellia, who was glaring at her with venomous, unspoken threats. The entire gallery seemed to freeze, waiting for the housemaid's response.
