Chapter 19

Vincenzo’s arrogant smile faltered slightly under the crushing, suffocating weight of Roland’s stare. The European lieutenant realized that the rumors of the American boss’s ruthlessness were entirely accurate.
"We are businessmen, Roland," Vincenzo attempted to backpedal, raising his hands in a placating gesture. "We do not seek a war. But the Thorne family offered a massive bounty for your head. It is difficult for some of our associates to ignore."
"Tell them to ignore it," Roland stated softly, turning back to watch Mavis laugh at a critic's joke. "Or I will make sure they do not live to spend it."
Vincenzo nodded stiffly and faded back into the crowd, the message received. Roland signaled silently to Marcus, who was stationed near the entrance. The head capo immediately increased the security perimeter, tightening the net around the gallery.
The rest of the evening passed without incident. When the final guests departed, Mavis walked over to Roland, her eyes shining with absolute joy and exhaustion.
"We did it," Mavis breathed, leaning against his broad chest.
"You did it, Mavis," Roland corrected gently, wrapping his strong arms securely around her waist. "You conquered them all."
They returned to the ultra-secure luxury penthouse Roland had rented overlooking the Seine. The city lights glittered below, a sprawling testament to the world they now traveled freely.

Mavis kicked off her heels and walked out onto the expansive glass balcony, breathing in the cool night air. Roland followed her, removing his tuxedo jacket and unbuttoning his crisp white shirt, exposing the elegant, negative-space tattoos on his chest.
"Roland," Mavis said softly, turning to face him. "I know this exhibition wasn't just about art for you. I saw you talking to that man at the bar. Are we in danger?"
