Chapter 10

The night outside the mansion was pitch black, a stark contrast to the luminous, bright interior where Alexander stood waiting. He had positioned himself in the grand foyer, a massive, cavernous space with a sweeping marble staircase and towering glass front doors. The crystal chandelier above cast a gentle, golden glow over the polished floors, illuminating the artistic tattoos on Alexander’s hands as he gripped his weapon.

The silence was deafening. The initial assault hadn't come with the roar of engines or the chaotic spray of automatic gunfire. Bianca’s family was utilizing professionals, attempting a stealth breach.

"Marcus," Alexander spoke quietly into a small radio clipped to his lapel. "Status on the perimeter."

"Thermal cameras are picking up movement in the tree line, Boss," Marcus’s voice crackled softly in his earpiece. "At least twenty hostiles. They are moving slowly toward the main gates. They're trying to bypass the outer sensors."

"Hold fire until they cross the threshold," Alexander commanded, his deep voice measured and calm. "Let them step into the light."

Alexander stood perfectly still, his tall, imposing figure reflected in the dark glass of the front doors. He thought of Oliver, sleeping peacefully upstairs, guarded by a housemaid who had shown more loyalty in one night than his fiancée had in a year. He thought of the heavy silver ring resting in his pocket, the square black stone burning like a coal against his chest.

Julian was out there. Alexander knew it in his bones. His brother hadn't just come to deliver a ring and kiss a traitor. Julian had come to watch the empire burn, or perhaps, to help put out the fire. Alexander didn't know which, but he was ready for both.

Suddenly, a massive, concussive explosion rocked the foundation of the estate.

The heavy iron gates at the front of the property were blown entirely off their hinges in a blinding flash of orange fire. The shockwave rattled the glass doors of the foyer, sending a cascade of dust falling from the high ceilings.

"They've breached the gates!" Marcus yelled over the radio, followed instantly by the deafening, rhythmic staccato of heavy gunfire as the estate's defenders opened up on the intruders.

The bright, airy colors of the mansion's interior seemed to pulse with the violence erupting outside. The warm golden light flickered briefly as the backup generators engaged.

Alexander did not flinch. He raised his handgun, his finger resting lightly on the trigger guard. He watched through the glass as the shadows outside detached themselves from the tree line, moving aggressively up the sweeping driveway. Muzzle flashes lit up the dark lawns like erratic lightning.

Then, amidst the chaos and the gunfire, a single figure stepped out from the smoke of the destroyed gates.

The man did not carry a rifle. He was not wearing tactical gear. He wore a dark, dusty tailored suit. He walked with a slow, deliberate limp, completely ignoring the bullets flying around him. The security floodlights caught his face, illuminating a prominent, jagged scar extending from his left eyebrow down to his cheekbone.

Julian had returned from the dead.

Alexander pushed open the heavy glass doors of the mansion and stepped out onto the front portico, stepping directly into the line of fire. He locked eyes with his brother across the war-torn driveway. The past and the present collided in a violent, bloody crescendo, and Alexander Whitlock stood ready to finally settle the score.
