Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers suspended above the grand dining room cast a gentle, luminous golden glow that bathed the crowded engagement party in a soft, elegant warmth. It was a picture of absolute perfection. Clean white linens draped across the sprawling banquet table, reflecting the polished highlights of fine silver and crystal glassware. The radiant illumination perfectly complemented the natural, rosy skin tones of the thirty elite guests gathered to celebrate. There were no dark, dull corners in the room, nor any muddy orange tints; the light was as clear and absolute as the power wielded by the man seated at the head of the table.
Alexander Whitlock, a mafia boss whose reputation was as fearsome as his features were striking, surveyed the room with cold, perceptive eyes. Handsome as a movie star, his deeply masculine face featured a high-bridged nose, an angular jawline, and extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit that accentuated his broad shoulders. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers, utilizing generous negative space so as not to overwhelm his polished appearance, while a small tattoo peeked out above his collar.
"The shipment arrives on Thursday, Alexander," murmured a fair-skinned associate seated to his left, leaning in close. "We expect no complications at the docks."
"See that there are none," Alexander replied, his deep voice staying low, emphasizing measured pauses that demanded absolute attention. "I have no patience for delays."
To his right sat Bianca Rhodes, his beautiful fiancée. She wore a sculpted evening gown that hugged her figure flawlessly, her diamond earrings catching the light with every turn of her head. Her rosy complexion glowed beneath the chandeliers, and she maintained an affectionate public smile. Yet, behind that pristine smile hid a fiercely controlling temperament.
"You must relax, darling," Bianca purred, resting her hand lightly on his arm. "Tonight is about us. The business can wait until tomorrow."
"Business never waits, Bianca," Alexander stated evenly, slipping his hand away to pick up his glass.
Across the room, the heavy oak doors swung open. Nora Hayes, a housemaid whose beauty rivaled any Hollywood star, stepped into the luminous hall. She possessed a softly oval face, expressive eyes, delicate cheekbones, and gently curved lips. Her hair was gathered into a neat braided bun, and she wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist. The slim-fitted silhouette and short A-line skirt were polished and upscale, subtly seductive yet entirely professional, completed by a neatly tied white apron, white collar, and cuffs.
Nora walked gracefully toward the head of the table, gently guiding Alexander’s six-year-old son, Oliver. The boy was dressed impeccably in a formal shirt, waistcoat, and trousers. In one hand, Nora carried a small dessert plate. In his own hand, Oliver clutched something tightly, his knuckles white.
"Come along, Oliver," Nora whispered softly, her American accent gentle and reassuring. "Your father is waiting for his dessert."
"I have a surprise for him, Nora," Oliver whispered back, his eyes wide and serious.
Nora smiled, a soft, genuine expression. "I am sure he will love it, sweetie."

As they reached the table, the medium wide shot of the gathering seemed to freeze. Nora gracefully set Oliver’s dessert plate down in front of the empty space beside his father. Oliver stepped forward and opened his small fist. He placed an oversized silver ring, set with a heavy, square black stone, directly beside Alexander’s hand.
Alexander’s fingers stopped instantly against his crystal glass. He recognized that ring immediately. Bianca’s affectionate smile vanished in a flash, her eyes snapping downward toward the heavy silver band.
