Chapter 6

Isabella Sterling appeared at the corridor entrance, stepping off the top step of the grand staircase.

Under the brilliant, warm light of the sconces, her gown looked like fresh blood spilling across the Persian runner. For a brief second, as she took in the sight of the shattered champagne flutes, the discarded fire poker, and the gaping black hole in the wall, Isabella’s face registered a flicker of genuine shock.

But the shock lasted less than a heartbeat.

Her calm, socially perfect mask rapidly hardened into something rigid and terrifying. Her fair skin seemed to turn to marble, devoid of any human warmth. She didn't look at the trembling boy in Emma’s arms with an ounce of maternal relief or concern. She looked at him the way one looks at a trapped rat that had somehow managed to chew its way out of a snare.

In her right hand, she clutched a heavy, antique brass key. The key to the latch Emma had just destroyed.

Emma didn't run. She couldn't. With Ethan shivering violently against her chest, she rose slowly to her feet. She shifted her body, firmly shielding the boy from his stepmother's line of sight. Her white cleaning gloves gripped Ethan’s dusty clothes, anchoring him to her.

Isabella took a slow, deliberate step forward, her high heels clicking ominously against the hardwood floor. Her eyes were icy, dead, and utterly devoid of mercy. She didn't raise her voice, but the venom in her tone cut through the air like a straight razor.

"Put him back," Isabella commanded, her voice hissing with lethal contempt.

Emma stood her ground, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "No," she said, her voice shaking but her resolve absolute. "I am taking him to his father."

Isabella’s lips curled into a wicked, patronizing sneer. She took another step, raising the brass key, pointing it at the young housekeeper. "You are a maid, Emma. You are nothing in this house. You will put that brat back in his room, you will clean up this glass, and you will walk out the back door with a generous severance. If you do not, I will ensure you spend the rest of your pathetic life in a cell for kidnapping my stepson."

May you like

"You're the one going to a cell," Emma fired back, holding the boy tighter.

Isabella let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "William will never believe you. He believes everything I say. Now, put him back before I make you."
