Chapter 1

The Sterling estate was a blinding spectacle of wealth, washed in the brilliant, saturated colors of an autumn gala. Emerald draperies framed the floor-to-ceiling windows, and the golden light of three massive crystal chandeliers reflected off the polished marble floors. Dozens of guests in vivid jewel tones mingled in the grand ballroom, their voices a rising hum of elite conversation.

Emma Torres navigated the crowded room with practiced invisibility. At twenty-four, she possessed a gentle, soft beauty, her fair, rosy skin glowing under the ballroom lights. She wore her crisp housekeeping uniform with quiet dignity—a pressed white apron over a dark dress, white cleaning gloves, sensible flats, and simple stud earrings. A practical silver wristwatch ticked faithfully on her wrist, counting down the hours of an agonizingly long shift.

She held a silver tray balanced perfectly on one hand, maneuvering past a group of laughing investors. From the corner of her eye, she spotted William Sterling. He was thirty-eight, ruggedly handsome, and possessed a deeply protective, commanding vibe that usually put the estate staff at ease. Tonight, however, the tailored lines of his black tuxedo seemed to suffocate him. He paced near the grand staircase, his jaw tight, his eyes constantly scanning the room, searching for something—or someone—that wasn't there.

"Have the groundskeepers checked the south gardens again?" William asked a passing security guard, his deep American accent frayed with raw anxiety. "My son knows he isn't supposed to wander past the hedge maze."

"They are checking right now, Mr. Sterling," the guard assured him.

A few feet away stood Isabella Sterling, William’s wife of three years and Ethan’s stepmother. She was thirty-four, draped in a breathtaking gown of brilliant ruby satin that caught every flash of light. Her fair complexion was flawless, her lips painted a perfect, chilling red. While her husband was unraveling over his missing five-year-old son, Isabella’s posture was remarkably relaxed. She took a sip of sparkling water, her icy blue eyes tracking Emma’s movement.

"Emma," Isabella called out, her voice a smooth, cultured purr that demanded instant obedience. "The champagne flutes in the upstairs master corridor need collecting. Please see to it immediately. We cannot have the upper floors looking like a tavern."

"Right away, Mrs. Sterling," Emma replied softly, her gentle voice polite and deferential.

As Emma turned toward the sweeping mahogany staircase, she caught a fleeting glimpse of Isabella’s expression in a gilded mirror. The woman’s smile had vanished entirely, replaced by a cold, calculating hardness that sent a sudden, inexplicable shiver down Emma’s spine. Suppressing her unease, Emma adjusted her grip on her tray and began the long climb up the stairs, leaving the bright noise of the party behind.
