Chapter 7

The false orders had consequences I had never traced backward.

Sal Greco came first.

My father’s oldest captain.

The first forged instruction removed him from port oversight for “health reasons.”

He had been fifty-four.

Perfectly healthy.

I called him.

He arrived an hour later furious enough to make my bodyguards nervous.

Good.

“Did you know?”

I asked.

“No.”

He looked at the ring.

Then understood.

His face changed.

“Son of a bitch.”

“Which one?”

“Pick.”

Fair.

Sal told me he challenged the order.

Warren showed him the seal.

My father’s ring impression.

That ended it.

“You believed him.”

“I believed Domenico.”

There.

That was the genius.

Warren did not borrow authority from himself.

He borrowed trust already earned by a dead man.

The second false order replaced estate security supervisors.

The third promoted Nolan.

The fourth transferred memorial foundation access to Celeste.

Every change looked reasonable alone.

Together, they created a path.

Remove older loyalty.

Insert Graham access.

Normalize Celeste around me.

Give Nolan operational standing.

Then let grief do the rest.

I looked at Nolan.

“Was becoming associate your idea?”

He shook his head.

“My father’s.”

“Did you want it?”

“Yes.”

Honest.

“Did you know the order was false?”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

There.

“From the start?”

“Yes.”

I leaned back.

That mattered.

Celeste had direct involvement in the ring theft.

Nolan knowingly accepted authority created through it.

Different choices.

Different guilt.

“What did you tell yourself?”

Nolan looked at his hands.

“That I could do the job.”

I nodded.

“You could.”

He looked up.

Surprised.

“That was never the question.”

Silence.

“You were good enough to earn a place.”

His face changed.

“And you accepted one stolen from a dead man instead.”

That hurt.

It should.

Sal laughed bitterly.

“All this because Warren couldn’t wait for Matteo to choose his own people.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

We looked at him.

“He was afraid Matteo would choose people who did not need Warren.”

That was closer.

Control is rarely about whether a person can lead.

It is about whether they might lead without you.
