Chapter 15

Nolan left Savelli operations.

Not the city.

Not the family.

The work.

He asked for no special settlement.

Good.

For months I heard almost nothing.

Then Arthur told me Nolan had begun managing a small independent transport company.

No Savelli contracts.

No borrowed crews.

No family pin.

Something his.

That mattered.

I visited once.

He looked startled.

“Inspection?”

“No.”

“Threat?”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

I shrugged.

“Coffee.”

He laughed.

First normal sound between us in months.

We sat.

He asked about Ava.

“Fine.”

“Celeste?”

“Not my update to give.”

He nodded.

Good.

Then I asked:

“Do you hate your father?”

His face changed.

Warren.

Dead.

Complicated.

“No.”

“Do you blame him?”

“Yes.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

Same.

He looked at me.

“He told us Savellis respected power, not patience.”

I thought.

“My father respected patience.”

“Warren thought that was propaganda.”

Maybe.

Nolan smiled sadly.

“I wanted to prove him right.”

“And?”

“I proved he could control me after he died.”

That was accurate.

Silence.

Then Nolan said:

“I’m sorry about Ava.”

No excuses.

Good.

“I know.”

“Will I see her?”

“I don’t know.”

His face tightened but he nodded.

“Fair.”

That was progress.

No bargaining.

No “I’m family.”

No using remorse as leverage.

Before leaving, I noticed no Savelli symbols anywhere in the office.

No borrowed ring.

No photographs with powerful relatives.

Just Nolan Graham on the door.

For the first time, he looked like a man who knew where his own name began.

May you like

Maybe losing stolen power had given him something better.

Identity without authentication.
