Chapter 4

The bright, cinematic colors of the grand foyer seemed to sharpen as the violence escalated. The complete lack of background music made the sounds of the confrontation incredibly stark—the heavy breathing, the shifting of polished leather shoes on marble, the rustle of expensive tailored fabrics.

Nolan, fueled by a mixture of desperate bravado and the need to protect his sister’s secrets, did not wait for Matteo to strike. He let out a sharp grunt and swung his heavy right fist, aiming a devastating blow directly at Matteo’s sharply defined jawline.

Matteo’s reflexes were honed by decades of underworld survival. He moved with a fluid, terrifying elegance. He simply tilted his head and slipped perfectly past the incoming punch. Nolan’s fist sailed harmlessly through the empty air over Matteo’s shoulder, pulling the younger man’s torso entirely off balance.

Using Nolan’s momentum against him, Matteo planted his feet firmly. He torqued his broad shoulders and drove one incredibly hard, explosive counterpunch straight across Nolan’s face.

The sickening crack of bone echoed off the high ceilings.

The sheer kinetic force of the blow lifted Nolan entirely off the ground. He spun violently backward, his arms flailing uselessly as he hurtled across the foyer. He crashed directly into the massive pile of stacked leather cases that sat beside the brass luggage trolley.

The heavy leather trunks and vintage suitcases toppled wildly across the pristine carpet. The chaotic avalanche of luggage knocked over a heavy folding reception stand with a deafening crash. Nolan fell hard among the scattered, rolling suitcases, entirely buried beneath the collapsing display. He lay there motionless, his formal suit ruined, blood beginning to pool on his fair, rosy skin.

For several agonizing seconds, no dialogue was spoken. The white American guests, capos, and bodyguards watched in absolute, paralyzed horror. The Boss had just laid out a high-ranking family associate with a single, devastating strike.

Matteo stood perfectly still, his chest rising and falling in slow, controlled rhythms. The refined, sharp tattoos on his knuckles were completely unmarked. He did not bother to rub his hand or adjust his suit. His cold, intimidating eyes slowly shifted from the broken man on the floor back toward his fiancée.

Celeste was backing away, her gala gown sweeping across the marble. Her chest heaved, her eyes wide with a terror she could no longer conceal. The protective shield of her brother had been dismantled in less than three seconds.

"You broke his jaw," Celeste whispered, her voice trembling so violently she could barely form the words.

"He is breathing," Matteo replied softly, the controlled pauses returning to his voice. "Which is a mercy. He did not earn."

Matteo took one slow, deliberate step toward her. "Now. Explain what you were trying to steal. From my daughter."

Celeste’s eyes darted frantically toward Ava, who was still clutching the velvet pouch behind June's legs. Realizing her entire life depended on destroying whatever was in that bag, Celeste made a fatal, desperate decision.
