Chapter 1

The grand foyer of the luxury hotel was bathed in bright, cinematic light. Massive skylights overhead allowed the afternoon sun to pour across the polished marble, creating a pristine, flawless environment completely devoid of any excessive yellow tint. The vibrant colors of the floral arrangements and the deep mahogany of the broad carpeted staircase stood out with startling clarity. There was absolutely no background music playing, leaving the vast space echoing with a chilling, unnatural silence. Near the sweeping descent of the stairs, a heavy rolling brass luggage trolley sat loaded with stacked leather cases.

Ava Savelli, only three years old, sat trembling on the lower tier of the brass cart. She wore a formal, pristine white child’s dress, a soft navy cardigan, and perfectly polished black flats. Her fair, rosy skin was pale with terror as her tiny hands gripped the cold metal rail of the trolley. Clutched tightly against her chest was a small, worn velvet pouch.

Standing over her was Celeste Graham, a thirty-four-year-old woman radiating pure malice. She was draped in a breathtaking emerald gala gown, her fair skin flushed with rage. Heavy diamond jewelry and a massive engagement ring caught the bright light as she raised her hands.

"You are going to give me that pouch right now, you little brat," Celeste demanded. Her sharp American accent echoed off the high ceiling, completely devoid of any maternal warmth.

"No!" Ava cried out, her tiny voice shaking. "It’s a secret!"

June Ellis, a twenty-six-year-old longtime employee of the Savelli family, stepped forward. Wearing a crisp, professional hotel-service uniform and sensible flats, her fair and rosy face was a mask of desperate panic. "Ms. Graham, please! She’s just a child. Whatever it is, let me take her back to her father."

"You speak when spoken to, June," Celeste snarled, not even turning her head. "This does not concern the help."

"She’s terrified, ma'am," June pleaded, taking another step closer. "Please, step away from the cart. The staircase is right there."

"I said, give it to me!" Celeste screamed at the toddler. When Ava only shrank back further, Celeste’s eyes darkened with sociopathic fury. She planted her designer heels on the marble floor, placed her hands on the heavy brass rail, and gave the luggage cart a violent, hard shove directly toward the descending carpeted staircase.

"Ava!" June shrieked, her American accent pitching into pure terror.

The brass wheels screeched against the marble as the cart rolled rapidly toward the precipice. Ava screamed, squeezing her eyes shut. June lunged forward with everything she had, her flats sliding on the slick floor. She grabbed the side rail of the trolley, her boots planting firmly at the very edge of the top stair. The cart jerked violently to a halt, the front wheels hanging perilously over the drop. June breathed heavily, her arms straining as she pulled the heavy cart backward to safety.

Celeste marched forward, her diamond heels clicking sharply. She pointed a perfectly manicured finger directly at the young employee.

"Forget what just happened," Celeste commanded furiously, her voice trembling with rage. "And give me the bag."

"I won't let you touch her," June replied breathlessly, shielding the crying toddler with her own body.

Before Celeste could raise her hand to strike the maid, the heavy double doors leading from the memorial ballroom slowly swung open. Matteo Savelli turned into the foyer.

He stopped dead in his tracks. His cold, intimidating eyes took in the precarious position of the cart, his weeping daughter, the defiant maid, and his furious fiancée. He had seen everything.
