Chapter 5

The camera held the same shot, focusing entirely on the heartbreaking vulnerability of the child standing in the luminous, golden glow of the chandeliers. The cascading light caught the tears drying on Ruby’s fair, rosy cheeks. The three-year-old girl looked up at the woman in the beautiful green dress, her innocent mind struggling to comprehend the cold, unyielding rejection.

Looking directly at Aurelia, bypassing the terrifying Mafia boss entirely, Ruby spoke.

“Mommy.”

The single word was a quiet, fragile whisper, yet it echoed with absolute, devastating clarity across the carved ivory-paneled walls and gilded mirrors.

“You promised you’d come back.”

Ruby’s lower lip trembled violently. She reached her tiny hand back out, keeping a desperate hold of Fiona’s white apron, using the brave housemaid as her only physical anchor in a world that had suddenly turned incredibly hostile. She stood frozen, waiting for her mother to acknowledge her, waiting for the warmth she so desperately craved.

The absolute, terrifying implication of the child's words crashed over the dining hall.

The collective silence of the wealthy, powerful guests transformed into a suffocating vacuum. The beautiful socialite had not just lied about the maid. She had abandoned her own flesh and blood, locking her in a dark outbuilding on the estate, simply to secure a marriage to the Mafia boss. It was a level of calculated, psychopathic ambition that sickened the men and women at the table.

Aurelia’s polite, reassuring smile disappeared instantly. The facade completely shattered.

Her eyes settled on Ruby for a fraction of a second, filled with a mixture of profound panic and vicious, unadulterated anger. Then, her gaze moved anxiously, frantically, back toward Dante. She was desperately searching his face for any sign of mercy, any indication that he might forgive the ultimate deception.

She found absolutely none.

Dante gave her a slow, knowing look. The extremely short stubble on his jawline seemed to harden into absolute granite. The cold, observant eyes of the executioner were fully locked in.

"Does a mother who locks her own blood in a cage deserve to breathe the air in my home?" Dante asked softly, the volume dropping into a register of pure, concentrated ice.

Every single guest at the massive table remained perfectly silent, facing him, paralyzed by the public unmasking of the future bride. The bright, airy colors of the engagement dinner felt permanently stained by the revelation of such calculated, systemic cruelty. The trap had been sprung, and the prey was entirely cornered. End before Aurelia answers.
