Chapter 4

The medium wide shot framed the immediate, terrifying fallout of Fiona’s softly spoken confession. The bright, airy colors of the dining hall felt suddenly charged with an explosive, high-voltage tension. The clean whites of the table linens and the polished highlights of the silver cutlery shimmered beneath the warm golden light, a stark contrast to the dark reality of the confrontation.
A collective, stifled gasp rippled through the gathered relatives and associates. To state that a three-year-old child had been locked up on the grounds of the Winslow estate was a horrifying revelation that disturbed even the hardened criminals sitting at the table.
Aurelia’s fair, rosy skin drained of color, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated panic. She realized the narrative was slipping rapidly from her manicured grasp.
Before Aurelia could open her mouth to shriek a denial, Dante moved.
He did not rush, nor did he display any outward sign of explosive anger. He simply stepped sideways with a fluid, terrifying masculine grace. His broad, powerful shoulders shifted beneath the tailored dark three-piece suit. In one deliberate, protective motion, Dante placed his towering frame entirely between Aurelia and both Fiona and little Ruby.
He was acting as an impenetrable wall, physically shielding the child and the brave housemaid from his furious fiancée.
Aurelia swallowed hard, sinking her manicured nails into the palms of her hands. She forced herself to meet Dante’s cold, observant eyes. She desperately attempted to restore her reassuring, polite smile, though her lips were trembling.
“I’ve never seen her before.”
The words came smoothly off Aurelia’s tongue, practiced and rapid. Her delivery was carefully light, attempting to sound entirely baffled by the situation.
But her smile no longer reached her eyes. The panic bled through the cracks of her aristocratic facade. She looked directly at Dante, hoping her denial would be enough to cast doubt on the maid's story.
Dante watched her without nodding. He stood perfectly still, a monument of lethal calculation.
"Is amnesia a common affliction among women wearing my ring?" Dante inquired. His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pause striking like the heavy toll of a bell.
Aurelia’s chest heaved slightly beneath the emerald satin gown. "Dante, darling, please. The maid is clearly unbalanced. She brought some stray child into the house to cause a scene. I have absolutely no idea who that little girl is."
"Does a stranger command the kind of terror that makes a child weep at the sight of her?" Dante asked, his gaze piercing straight through her lies.
Hidden behind the broad, dark wall of Dante’s suit, little Ruby slowly released her white-knuckled grip on Fiona's apron. The three-year-old girl stepped slightly to the side, her scuffed flat shoes making no sound on the polished marble floor.

Ruby slowly raised her small, tear-stained face toward her mother. The child had spent hours locked in the dark, cold guesthouse, completely alone, crying until her throat was raw. She had been promised a reunion, a promise that had been violently broken.
The child’s presence, small and devastatingly vulnerable, commanded the attention of the entire room.
