Chapter 7

Elena had the letter with her.

Folded behind the ultrasound.

That was why Victoria tried to burn the photograph.

Not because she thought fire would erase a pregnancy.

Because the letter was tucked against it.

The scorched corner belonged partly to the envelope.

I looked at the damaged paper.

My father’s handwriting remained intact.

Silvio stared at it like a man watching his grave open.

I read the note aloud.

Not every word.

Enough.

The old capos listened.

When I finished, nobody looked at Silvio the same way.

He tried once.

“Your father was ill.”

Wrong.

I turned.

“Finish carefully.”

He stopped.

Good.

Then one capo, Angelo Voss, spoke from the crowd.

“Your father told me the same thing.”

Silvio looked at him.

Angelo continued.

“He said Sloan was useful business, not blood.”

Another voice.

Then another.

Three men.

My father had privately warned them not to let the alliance become structural.

Silvio suppressed those conversations.

Not by force.

By interpretation.

He told everyone the boss had softened near death.

That grief made him sentimental.

Same old strategy.

Call inconvenient wisdom weakness.

I looked at the room.

“How many of you believed the Sloan marriage was my father’s final wish?”

Eleven hands.

Silvio’s work.

I almost laughed.

I had agreed partly because I thought honoring him required it.

Victoria knew that.

She had repeated the phrase often:

What your father wanted.

Now I saw the mechanism.

Dead men are useful to manipulators because they cannot correct the quote.

Victoria whispered:

“I believed Silvio too.”

Maybe.

But she still knew enough to hide Elena.

Again.

Shared deception does not erase individual choice.

Then Elena said:

“I came tonight because I finally found someone inside Caradonna who would bring me directly to you.”

I looked at her.

“Who?”

A bodyguard stepped forward.

Young.

Twenty-eight.

Marcus Hale.

New to my inner detail.

“I did.”

Silvio went pale.

May you like

Because Marcus was not random.

He was Silvio’s godson.
