Chapter 11

The baby was a girl.

We learned together.

Elena cried.

I did not.

For approximately eight seconds.

Then I did too.

The doctor pretended not to notice.

Professional kindness.

Elena asked:

“Do you want to name her?”

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“We name her.”

Together.

That mattered.

We chose Lucia.

My mother’s middle name.

Elena’s grandmother’s first.

No political meaning.

No dynasty.

Just family.

When word reached the capos, three older men immediately began discussing what Lucia’s birth meant for succession.

Rafe shut them down before I heard.

Good man.

I called the meeting anyway.

“Lucia inherits nothing automatically.”

Silence.

One captain frowned.

“She’s your first child.”

“Yes.”

“Then—”

“No.”

I looked around.

“My child is not an organizational plan.”

Some men exchanged glances.

I continued.

“If she grows up and wants nothing to do with this family business, she gets nothing to do with it.”

That offended them more.

Excellent.

Then Marcus Hale spoke from the back.

“Good.”

Silvio’s godson.

Still employed.

Promoted?

Not yet.

I did not reward one good act with immediate power.

That creates another bad lesson.

But I trusted him more.

Slowly.

Elena appreciated that.

“You’re not turning him into a hero.”

“No.”

“He helped us.”

“Yes.”

“But?”

“He did one brave thing.”

I shrugged.

“Now he gets to do ordinary work well.”

She smiled.

“Cruel.”

Maybe.

May you like

But organizations become dangerous when a single heroic moment replaces long judgment.

I had learned enough about myth already.
