Chapter 16

A year and a half after the lawn incident, Luca brought Camille to me.
Not to the estate.
Neutral restaurant.
Their engagement ring was absent.
Good.
They were seeing each other again.
Slowly.
Camille had been working in an independent design business.
No Rourke money.
No DeLuca access.
She looked different.
Not physically.
Less certain the room owed her attention.
Luca spoke first.
“We’re not asking permission.”
I raised an eyebrow.
Progress.
“We’re telling you because hiding it would repeat the problem.”
Better.
Camille added:
“And I’m not asking to come back into family dinners.”
Even better.
I asked one question.
“What changed?”
Luca answered.
“I stopped needing the relationship to prove anything.”
Camille looked at him.
“And I stopped needing marriage to get a chair.”
Good.
Did that guarantee success?
No.
People relapse into old patterns all the time.
But at least they could name them.
I told them exactly that.
Camille smiled faintly.
“You really know how to bless a relationship.”
“I’m not blessing anything.”
Luca laughed.
For the first time, it sounded like a man speaking with his mother rather than a son trying to extract validation from the boss.
Before leaving, Camille asked about Arthur.
“Still impossible.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
Months later, Arthur allowed her back for one dinner.
Not because Luca requested it.
Because he did.
Camille arrived.
Saw the missing head chair.
Paused.
Then sat wherever an empty place existed.
Arthur noticed.
May you like
Said nothing.
Sometimes changed behavior is the only apology worth repeating.
