Chapter 13

Camille asked Arthur for a meeting after nine months.

He said no.

She waited.

Three months later, asked again.

He said yes.

I attended because Arthur requested me.

The meeting took place on the lawn.

Same area.

No birthday decorations.

No crowd.

Camille approached slowly.

Arthur sat in his wheelchair.

She stopped several feet away.

“I’m sorry.”

Arthur looked bored.

“For what?”

Good.

Camille swallowed.

“For tipping your chair.”

He waited.

“For mocking your age.”

More.

“For helping people laugh.”

More.

“For wanting you to look weak because I thought your weakness would make space for me.”

Arthur finally nodded.

There.

Specific.

Then he asked:

“Do you think I’m finished?”

Camille’s eyes filled.

“No.”

Arthur shook his head.

“Wrong answer.”

She looked confused.

“I am finished.”

I almost interrupted.

He raised one hand.

“With leading.”

He smiled.

“I’m eighty-three next month. I should be allowed to be finished with something.”

Camille cried.

Arthur continued.

“The insult was never that you thought I was old.”

His voice stayed calm.

“The insult was that you thought old meant disposable.”

Silence.

That was the heart.

She had treated vulnerability as transfer opportunity.

Then Camille said:

“My family taught me if you don’t take a seat when it opens, someone else does.”

Arthur almost smiled.

“That explains you.”

Then:

“It doesn’t excuse you.”

She nodded.

No hug.

No forgiveness ceremony.

When Camille left, Arthur looked at me.

“She might become decent.”

“Might.”

“Don’t let Luca marry her because I said that.”

I laughed.

“Trust me.”

May you like

He grinned.

For a retired founder, he still enjoyed giving orders.
