Chapter 8

Beatrice cried when she saw the room.

Not from guilt.

At first.

From frustration.

“You weren’t supposed to see it like this.”

I looked around.

“How was I supposed to see it?”

“After she adjusted.”

There.

Another word I hated.

Adjusted.

Children survive enough and adults rename surrender.

I picked up the new bell.

“No device?”

She shook her head.

“This one was for her.”

“What rules?”

Silence.

I waited.

Nina would be allowed to ring once in the morning.

Once before bed.

Not for me.

For the caretaker.

If she behaved for three days, one supervised phone call with me.

I stared.

“You were going to ration my voice.”

Beatrice looked down.

“To teach her control.”

“No.”

I held up the bell.

“To teach her you controlled access to me.”

She started crying harder.

“My father did this with us.”

There.

History.

Beatrice’s father, Enzo Ravelli, my uncle.

Cold.

Traditional.

Admired.

He sent Beatrice to Hawthorne for a month when she was six because she repeatedly interrupted family dinners.

I had never known.

“What happened?”

She laughed bitterly.

“I stopped interrupting.”

Of course.

“And you call that success.”

“For years.”

She stared at the room.

“When Nina started ringing the bell for you, I hated it.”

Not because it was rude.

Because it proved another version of childhood existed.

A little girl could call.

A powerful father could come.

No punishment.

No humiliation.

No waiting three days to earn his voice.

Beatrice whispered:

“You made it look so easy.”

I understood.

Envy.

Grief.

Resentment.

None excused the plan.

“You could have been angry at your father.”

“I was.”

“But you chose Nina.”

Her face broke.

Yes.

Because children are safer targets than dead parents.

Caleb appeared at the doorway under guard.

He looked at the prepared room.

Then at his wife.

“You never told me about the bell rules.”

Interesting.

He knew kidnapping.

Not the conditioning afterward.

Beatrice looked at him.

“You didn’t ask.”

There.

Their alliance cracked.

Caleb wanted political leverage.

Beatrice wanted to recreate a childhood wound until it looked normal.

Different motives.

Same victim.

That was how conspiracies grow.

Nobody needs the same reason.

They only need the same person to pay.
