Chapter 16

One year after the dinner, Nina turned four.
She wanted a chocolate cake.
Pink candles.
No musicians.
No formal capos.
And the brass bell.
That surprised me.
“Why?”
“To call cake.”
Reasonable.
We placed it beside her plate.
Beatrice attended because Nina invited her.
Caleb did not.
Also Nina’s choice.
Anthony came.
Ellen.
A few family members.
No speeches.
Halfway through dinner I stepped into the adjoining study for a short call.
Old habit.
Five minutes became twelve.
Then I heard it.
Ding.
One clear ring.
My body froze.
For a second, every memory returned.
The broken base.
Tiny blinking light.
Unknown voice.
Is the girl alone yet?
Then the bell rang again.
Ding.
Nina shouted:
“DADDY, CAKE!”
Everyone laughed.
Including me.
I ended the call.
Walked into the dining room.
Nina pointed accusingly at my chair.
“You late.”
“Yes.”
“Sit.”
“Yes, boss.”
Beatrice covered her face to hide a smile.
I sat.
Nothing bad happened.
No SUV waited outside.
No secret committee listened.
No adult decided what Nina’s ring meant.
She had used the bell exactly as Elise once intended.
Come to dinner.
Your daughter is waiting.
Simple.
After cake, Nina handed the bell to Beatrice.
“Ring.”
Beatrice froze.
Then looked at me.
I said nothing.
Nina repeated:
“Ring.”
Beatrice tapped it once.
A clear note filled the room.
Nina laughed.
May you like
The sound no longer belonged to fear.
That was enough.
