Chapter 7

Daniel found Harper’s missing party bracelet inside the elevator.

I had not even known it was missing.

She wore a tiny silver chain with a blue enamel bird. Her mother bought it before she died.

Harper noticed the moment Daniel brought it upstairs.

“My bird.”

She reached for it.

I gave it to her.

Then asked:

“How did it get there?”

She frowned.

“Aunt Valerie pulled me.”

My jaw tightened.

The bracelet must have caught when Valerie shoved her.

Harper continued.

“I was hiding.”

“Where?”

“Behind flowers.”

The lantern display.

Of course.

She had been playing near the elevator before the gala.

“What did you hear?”

She concentrated.

Children remember fragments.

Sometimes fragments matter more than adult summaries.

“Uncle Nick said basement.”

I nodded.

“What else?”

“Aunt Valerie said black chair.”

Anything else?

Harper suddenly whispered:

“She said Daddy comes back too late and everybody already chooses.”

There.

No interpretation needed.

The plan in a child’s words.

Then:

“She saw me.”

My chest tightened.

“What happened?”

“She said don’t tell.”

“Then?”

“She took my arm.”

I looked toward the atrium.

Valerie had not shoved Harper into the elevator randomly.

She was trying to frighten the witness.

Maybe send her down one floor and have staff bring her back.

Maybe simply scare her enough that she stopped talking.

Whatever explanation Valerie later preferred, one truth remained.

She put a four-year-old inside a moving part of her scheme because the child heard too much.

I found my aunt in the Atlantic Room alone.

“You touched Harper because she overheard you.”

Valerie did not deny it.

“She needed to learn not to listen behind adults.”

I stared.

“There are moments when people tell you exactly who they are.”

Her eyes hardened.

“She was never in danger.”

“That sentence does not help you.”

“She would have gone to the next guest floor.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“Nicholas had already changed the elevator.”

For the first time, Valerie’s face changed.

Small.

Real.

She had not known the override was active yet.

Interesting.

Nicholas had put Harper at more risk than Valerie intended.

The conspiracy was already outrunning its architect.
