Chapter 16

Valerie returned to a family dinner in spring.

No gala.

No ceremonial role.

Invited by me.

Harper knew beforehand.

Her choice mattered more.

“She stay far?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

Valerie sat three seats away.

No pearls tonight.

Maybe coincidence.

Maybe symbolism.

I did not ask.

Dinner stayed ordinary.

Nicholas argued with Daniel about baseball.

Raymond complained about fish.

Harper ate only the cheese inside her ravioli and left the pasta shell like evidence of some private war.

Normal.

Halfway through dinner, Valerie’s water glass tipped.

Harper looked over.

Valerie froze.

Then laughed softly and wiped it herself.

No staff summoned.

No authority performance.

Harper watched.

Small things matter after big harm.

Later, as everyone moved toward the lobby, Harper stopped in front of the elevator.

Valerie stopped too.

I watched.

Harper pressed the call button.

Doors opened.

She looked at Valerie.

“You coming?”

My aunt’s face changed.

She looked at me.

Again, I gave her nothing.

Harper’s choice.

Valerie stepped inside.

Harper stayed beside me.

Then grinned.

“Not me.”

The doors closed on Valerie alone.

I almost laughed.

She probably did too.

When the elevator returned, Valerie stepped out.

Harper looked at her.

“It stopped?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

That was all.

May you like

Not forgiveness announced.

Just fear becoming smaller.
