Chapter 9

The main dining hall of the Castellano estate was a cavernous, opulent room, bathed in the same bright, cinematic light that defined the entire mansion. The long mahogany table was surrounded by twelve men. They were the elders, the senior capos, the architects of the American syndicate. White men in expensive suits, their fair skin flushed with expensive wine and the confidence of untouchable power.

The heavy oak doors swung open.

Raffaele Castellano walked into the room. He did not speak. His polished leather shoes echoed rhythmically against the hardwood floor. He walked slowly, his thick, slightly wavy hair slicked back perfectly, his unbuttoned shirt revealing the dark, artistic tattoos on his chest.

The low hum of conversation immediately died. The elders sensed the shift in the atmosphere. The temperature in the room plummeted.

Raffaele reached the head of the table. He did not sit down. He rested his tattooed hands flat against the polished mahogany, leaning forward slightly. His cold, sharp eyes slowly swept across the faces of the men who had guided his family for decades.

"Gentlemen," Raffaele began, his voice incredibly low, forcing the men to lean forward in silence. "We have always prided ourselves on loyalty. On the sanctity of the family."

"Always, Raffaele," an older capo named Vincent nodded, raising his glass slightly. "It is the foundation of our empire."

"Indeed," Raffaele murmured, pausing deliberately. "Which is why I find it highly troubling that several members of this very table orchestrated the abduction and imprisonment of my fiancée three years ago."

The dining hall erupted into sudden, nervous tension. Several elders shifted uncomfortably in their seats, exchanging panicked, wide-eyed glances.

"Raffaele, what are you talking about?" Vincent asked, forcing a confused laugh, his American accent wavering. "Evelyn ran away. Bianca handled the investigation personally."

"Bianca is currently locked beneath the floorboards of the bridal suite," Raffaele stated quietly.

The silence that followed was absolute and terrifying.

"She confessed," Raffaele lied smoothly, his voice a measured, deadly hum. "She gave me the names of the five elders who helped her secure the soundproofing. The men who authorized the construction of the hidden chamber."

Vincent’s rosy face drained of all color, turning a sickly, pale white. He instinctively reached his hand inside his tailored suit jacket, moving toward his concealed weapon.

"I wouldn't," Raffaele whispered.

Before Vincent’s fingers could touch the grip of his pistol, the doors of the dining hall burst open. A dozen of Raffaele’s most loyal, heavily armed bodyguards flooded the room, their weapons drawn and leveled at the seated elders.

"Nobody moves," the lead bodyguard barked.

Raffaele stood perfectly still, his posture relaxed, entirely unbothered by the sudden display of overwhelming force. He looked at Vincent, his highly angular face devoid of any mercy.

"You thought I was a puppet," Raffaele said slowly, his volume remaining lethally low. "You thought you could break my heart, hand me an empire, and control me from the shadows."

May you like

"She was a weakness, Raffaele!" Vincent shouted, throwing his hands up in surrender. "She made you soft! We did what we had to do to ensure the Castellano name remained feared!"

"You wanted me to be feared," Raffaele murmured softly, walking slowly around the table toward Vincent. "Congratulations, Vincent. You succeeded."
