Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured generously through the towering floor-to-ceiling windows of the old bridal suite, casting a brilliant, natural light across the room. There was no yellow, aged tint to the atmosphere; the light was crisp and cinematic, illuminating the pristine white walls and the polished hardwood floors. Anna Mitchell, a twenty-six-year-old housemaid dressed in a crisp professional uniform, apron, and sensible flat shoes, moved methodically across the room. Her fair, rosy cheeks were slightly flushed from the exertion as she pushed the heavy vacuum cleaner over the expansive floorboards.
Standing near the grand mahogany doorway was Raffaele Castellano. At thirty-one, he possessed a devastating, masculine beauty that mirrored a classic movie star, yet radiated the unmistakable, lethal aura of a Mafia boss. His thick, slightly wavy hair was slicked back naturally, with a few loose strands falling perfectly over his forehead, creating a deceptive, romantic charm. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jawline were framed by an extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. He wore a dark, tailored suit, the crisp dress shirt beneath it unbuttoned at the chest. Artistic, refined tattoos crept up his hands and fingers—sharp designs utilizing enough negative space that they remained elegant, never dense or overwhelming.
Beside him stood his three-year-old son, Ethan, wearing a formal child’s shirt, trousers, and pristine white sneakers. The boy clung loosely to his father’s trousers, his wide blue eyes watching the maid work.
"Make sure you get the corners, Anna," Raffaele said. His voice was an instrument of absolute control. He spoke slowly, with deliberate, measured pauses between his words. His volume remained incredibly low, yet it carried an undeniable, dangerous weight that demanded immediate obedience.
"Yes, Mr. Castellano. I am almost finished with this section," Anna replied, her American accent respectful and slightly breathless over the hum of the vacuum.
She pushed the machine toward the center of the suite, right over a seemingly seamless joint in the antique hardwood floor. Suddenly, the vacuum let out a harsh, mechanical screech and jammed abruptly.
Anna frowned, her fair skin paling slightly as she knelt. "I apologize, Boss. Something is caught in the roller."
"Fix it," Raffaele murmured softly, his sharp, intimidating eyes resting on her.
Anna bent down, her fingers working to dislodge whatever had jammed the machine against the narrow seam in the wood. She pulled firmly. To her absolute bewilderment, the blockage did not tear or snap. Instead, a long, pristine white fabric slowly began to slide out from underneath the solid floorboards.
It was a wedding veil.
Anna stared at the sheer, delicate fabric in her hands, her mind entirely unable to process how it was weaving through the solid wood. Her breath caught in her throat. She looked up, her blue eyes wide with complete, unadulterated confusion.
"Boss…" Anna stammered, her voice shaking violently. "This veil is coming out of the floor."
Raffaele froze. The casual, romantic looseness of his posture vanished instantly. He took a slow, deliberate step away from the doorway, leaving Ethan standing perfectly still. As Raffaele stared down at the trailing white lace grasped in the maid's trembling hands, all the color drained from his fair, rosy face.

For a fraction of a second, the terrifying Mafia boss looked entirely broken. His jaw locked, the muscles feathering beneath his stubble. When he spoke, the low, measured cadence of his voice was laced with a chilling, devastating realization.
"This was Evelyn’s."
