Chapter 10

At eight, I called a standard council meeting.

Nothing unusual.

Rhea and Gavin absent.

Sebastian technically retired.

Michael present.

Six other captains waited.

I gave one simple order.

Move two crews from the south warehouse to the river district.

Routine.

The first captain refused.

Then another.

Then another.

Five total.

Not seven.

Michael obeyed.

One more hesitated.

Then obeyed too.

Interesting.

The refusal was supposed to look coordinated and overwhelming.

Instead it looked awkward.

I let the silence sit.

Then asked:

“Why?”

Anthony Bellini, Sebastian’s ally, answered.

“Because no boss acts without family restraint.”

There.

Phase Two.

I nodded.

“Which restraint?”

“The Inner Chair.”

I looked around.

“It does not exist.”

“It should.”

Another captain joined.

“We want restoration.”

“Why?”

No one had a clean answer.

Tradition.

Balance.

Continuity.

All words.

No mechanism.

No accountability.

No explanation for why these particular men should hold power.

Then I placed my mother’s notebook on the table.

The room changed.

Anthony went pale.

He knew it.

I read one entry.

ANTHONY BLOCKED DISCIPLINE AGAINST HIS COUSIN AFTER THE GIRL’S FAMILY COMPLAINED.

No names.

No humiliation of victims.

Enough.

Another.

THOMAS USED CHAIR ACCESS TO ERASE A DEBT HIS SON CREATED.

Another.

MICHAEL REMAINED SILENT.

Michael lowered his head.

Truth.

Not selective punishment.

The old system protected insiders.

That was what they wanted restored.

Not balance.

Protection from consequence.

I closed the notebook.

“You do not want someone above the boss.”

My voice stayed calm.

“You want someone above accountability.”

Silence.

Then I told them about Ada.

Not every detail.

Enough.

The staged test was not voluntary.

Sebastian lied.

Three captains looked horrified.

Two looked angry at Sebastian.

Anthony did not.

Good.

There was the core.

The coalition shattered in front of me.

May you like

Not because I defeated them.

Because their shared story could not survive full information.
