Chapter 6

"No! Nolan, please!" Lucille shrieked, kicking off her expensive heels and scrambling backward across the marble floor, her emerald gown dragging behind her. "You can't do this! I am a Harper! My family will kill you! My father will slaughter your entire syndicate for this!"

The heavy mahogany double doors of the salon swung open violently. Marcus, a towering man with a heavily scarred face and a dark trench coat, stepped into the room, flanked by two equally intimidating enforcers. They moved with absolute, silent precision, ignoring the lavish surroundings and focusing entirely on their boss.

"Will you escort my former fiancée to the holding cells in the sub-basement?" Nolan asked, not taking his eyes off the weeping woman backed against the wall.

"No! No, please!" Lucille shrieked, kicking and thrashing wildly as the two enforcers reached out and grabbed her by the arms. They hauled her to her feet with effortless strength, the delicate fabric of her elegant evening gown tearing audibly at the seams. "I loved you, Nolan! You owe me! I secured your empire!"

"Will you ensure she is gagged if she continues to scream, Marcus?" Nolan inquired, casually adjusting the open collar of his dark suit.

Marcus nodded grimly. "Yes, boss. Let's go, princess."

The enforcers dragged Lucille backward toward the doors. Her threats devolved into hysterical, panicked sobs that echoed down the grand hallway until the heavy doors clicked shut behind them, sealing the salon in a profound, suffocating silence once more. The engagement was violently, irreparably over.

Nolan stood perfectly still for a long moment. The tension slowly bled out of his powerful shoulders. He turned his head, his dark, swept-back hair catching the light of the crystal chandeliers, and looked across the room to where Iris was standing. She had gently guided Walter to a velvet sofa, helping the exhausted man sit down, her own body shaking with silent, agonizing shock.

Nolan walked slowly back across the polished marble floor. He stopped before them, his towering frame casting a protective shadow.

"Are you harmed, Walter?" Nolan asked, his deep voice softening remarkably, losing the lethal edge it had carried moments before.

"I am tired, Mr. Mercer," Walter replied, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. "And I am cold. But I am alive. Thanks to this young woman."

"I will have the private physician brought here immediately," Nolan said, turning his attention fully to Iris.

He dropped to one knee, completely ignoring the crease it put in his expensive tailored trousers, bringing himself down to eye level with her as she knelt beside the sofa.

"Iris," Nolan whispered, his voice a quiet, intimate register. "I am so deeply sorry."

Iris looked up, her puffy, shadowed eyes meeting his. "She was going to kill him, Mr. Mercer. She just left him in the water."

"I know," Nolan said, his own eyes burning with fierce, uncompromising resolve. "And she will pay for it. I swear it on my life."

"You... you would do that for him?" Iris whispered, her expressive eyes wide with disbelief, her hands trembling over her rumpled white apron.

"Do you believe I would allow a woman who murders the innocent to walk free in my house?" Nolan asked, a flicker of profound, protective warmth entering his cold eyes as he looked at her.

"I didn't know what to expect, sir," Iris whispered, fresh tears spilling over her fair, rosy cheeks. "I just knew I couldn't let him freeze out there."

"Did you think a monster would punish the only person with the courage to bring the truth to light?" Nolan asked gently.

He stood up straight, offering her his hand. "Come," Nolan said softly, pulling her to her feet. "We cannot stay in this room. The estate will be on lockdown within the hour, and the Harper family will likely retaliate before dawn once they realize Lucille is missing."

"Where will I go, sir? I am just a maid," Iris whispered, looking down at her creased black dress.

"You are not a maid tonight, Iris," Nolan replied, his deep voice resolute. "You are under my absolute protection. You, Walter, and Theo."
