Chapter 10

Nolan stood by the tall, repaired windows of his private study, gazing out over the sprawling, manicured grounds. He had changed into a fresh, immaculate dark three-piece suit, his powerful shoulders carrying the weight of his newly solidified empire. The neatly trimmed stubble on his jawline perfectly framed his cold, observant eyes as he listened to Marcus’s final casualty report.

"Are the remaining Harper territories completely under our control, Marcus?" Nolan asked, not turning away from the glass.

"Yes, Boss," Marcus grunted, shifting his weight. "The capos surrendered at dawn. The entire western seaboard is yours now. And Lucille... the commission took her. They want to make an example out of her for her father's unsanctioned attack."

"Do you believe they will show her any mercy after she targeted my household?" Nolan inquired, his deep voice dropping to a terrifying, satisfied rumble.

"Not a chance in hell, sir," Marcus replied grimly.

As Marcus left, the heavy oak door of the study opened again. Iris stepped inside, and Nolan’s breath hitched slightly in his chest. She was no longer wearing the fitted black maid dress with the white apron. Instead, she wore a beautifully tailored, emerald-green silk blouse and dark trousers, clothes Nolan had personally ordered for her before the sun rose.

"Did you sleep at all, Iris?" Nolan asked, closing the distance between them, his cold eyes warming instantly at the sight of her elegant transformation.

"A little," Iris answered softly. "Theo is awake. He is asking for you. And Walter is resting comfortably; the doctor says he will make a full recovery."

"Do you believe the savior of the Mercer family should ever wear a maid's uniform again?" Nolan asked, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touching his lips as he offered her his tattooed arm.

Iris looked down at his offered arm, the artistic, refined tattoos on his hand stark against the crisp white cuff of his shirt. She had crossed a threshold last night, stepping out of the shadows and into the blinding light of the mafia king's inner circle. The transition was terrifying, yet looking into his movie-star handsome face, she felt a profound sense of rightness.

"What happens now, Nolan?" Iris asked softly, taking his hand, her fingers resting gently against his skin.

"Shall we go see my son, and then rebuild our family?" Nolan asked, leading her out of the study and into the bright, airy corridors of the estate.

They walked together toward the family dining room, a smaller, more intimate space bathed in soft elegant warmth. Theo was already sitting at the table, swinging his legs in his cream Christmas sweater, happily eating a plate of pancakes while Walter sat beside him, looking remarkably healthier.

"Daddy! Iris!" Theo cheered, his rosy cheeks glowing with happiness as they entered the room.

"Do you think he has room for actual food, or is he entirely made of sugar now?" Nolan asked, his deep voice filled with a warm, genuine amusement that had been absent from the house for years.

He sat down beside his son, while Iris took the chair on his other side. It was a picture of domestic tranquility, a stark contrast to the blood that had been spilled on the marble floors just hours before.

As the morning progressed, the heavy machinery of the mafia syndicate began to churn outside the walls, dealing with the fallout of the Harper family's destruction. Capos arrived for meetings, ledgers were balanced, and territories were divided. But Nolan remained in the private wing, prioritizing the fragile peace he had finally secured.

Later that afternoon, Nolan and Iris walked together through the pristine rose gardens. The clean whites and gentle golden highlights of the sun caught the edges of the blooming flowers.

"Will you be able to handle this life, Iris?" Nolan asked, stopping near a marble fountain. His tone was serious, his cold, observant eyes searching her face. "Will the violence of my world chase away the gentleness in yours?"

"Do you think I am so easily broken?" Iris replied, a fierce spark in her expressive eyes. "I stood up to Lucille. I stood in a room while bullets hit the walls. I am not fragile, Nolan."

"Are you certain you want to stand beside a man who solves his problems with a gun?" Nolan asked, stepping closer, his hands gently resting on her waist.

"Are you certain you want a woman who will constantly question you?" Iris countered, a small, genuine smile playing on her lips.

Nolan’s angular jaw relaxed, a low, rumbling chuckle escaping his chest. It was a rare, beautiful sound. "Would I have it any other way?"

He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, consuming kiss. The quiet mutual affection they had harbored for so long ignited into a burning, undeniable passion. He held her tightly against his broad shoulders, a king finally finding his queen.

When they parted, Nolan looked toward the horizon, where the city skyline loomed. The war with the Harper syndicate was over, but in his world, peace was always temporary.

"Are you ready to meet the commission tomorrow, Iris?" Nolan asked, his eyes hardening back into the cold, calculated stare of a boss.

"I am ready," Iris whispered, looking out at the city with him. "What happens if they don't accept me?"

"Do you truly believe anyone in this city can tell me no?" Nolan asked, the open-ended promise of a new conflict hanging in the beautiful, luminous air as they turned back toward the mansion.
