Chapter 3

The continuous, muted clatter of silver cutlery against porcelain plates provided a rhythmic backdrop to the elegant dinner party, completely oblivious to the silent crisis erupting at the head of the table.

Reuben Ashford missed absolutely nothing.

The Mafia boss had seen the entire interaction in his peripheral vision. He noticed the gentle, malicious slide of the glass. He noticed the instantaneous, conditioned terror in his son's physical reaction. And he noticed the desperate, white-knuckled grip Jonah maintained on the beautiful housemaid's wrist.

Reuben did not move his powerful shoulders. He simply stared at his son's trembling fingers, his heavily tattooed hands resting completely still on the table. The generous spacing of the ink was clearly visible under the warm, golden chandelier light.

He slowly turned his head. The loose strands of thick, slightly wavy hair falling over his forehead cast no shadows in the bright, luminous room, but the sheer gravity of his presence seemed to darken the space immediately surrounding him. He shifted his cold, terrifyingly perceptive gaze away from the glass and looked directly into Rhea’s eyes.

Rhea held his intense, unyielding stare, her wrist still held firmly by the terrified child.

“Rhea. Why is Jonah afraid?”

Reuben’s voice was deep, low, and impossibly deliberate. The question dropped into the silent, luminous room like a heavy stone into still water. The measured pause before his inquiry acted like a physical shockwave.

Instantly, every single guest at the massive, crowded table stopped eating. Silver cutlery froze halfway to porcelain plates. The melodic hum of polite, American-accented conversations died completely, replaced by a deafening, ringing silence. Dozens of faces turned toward the head of the table, their attention captured by the sudden, terrifying shift in the Mafia boss's demeanor.

Rhea swallowed hard, the muscles in her throat contracting visibly beneath the crisp white collar of her maid dress. She was entirely exposed beneath the bright, golden glow, trapped between the man who owned the city and the woman who was about to marry him.

Before Rhea could formulate a single word, Lucinda Vale moved to intercept the narrative. She realized the situation was slipping rapidly from her manicured grasp. She needed to immediately reassert her control and paint the incident as a trivial, psychological quirk of a traumatized child, lest her dark secret be exposed to the entire syndicate.

The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Lucinda.

The bright, clear lighting illuminated every detail of her sculpted beauty—the flawless, rosy skin, the sharp contour of her cheekbones, and the brilliant flash of her diamond earrings.

Lucinda looked directly at Reuben, projecting an aura of complete, unbothered calm. She met his cold gaze with a faint, reassuring smile, designed to mimic affectionate exasperation, as if dealing with a mildly difficult situation.

“Jonah’s always afraid of water.”

Lucinda delivered the words with a smooth, casually certain tone. Her American accent was perfectly pitched, carrying a light, dismissive air. She spoke as though she were reminding him of a well-known, tragic fact following his wife's death four months prior.
