Chapter 1

The engagement dinner inside the sprawling Ashford mansion was a blinding display of orchestrated perfection. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, casting a continuous, warm golden light across intricately carved ivory-paneled walls and heavy gilded moldings. The soft illumination danced over a massive carved marble fireplace, flickering against the polished walnut tables that filled the vast room. The air was thick with the scent of expensive cigars, roasted meats, and the heavy perfume of white roses spilling from ornate silver candelabras. Surrounding the tables in plush champagne velvet chairs sat the elite of the American underworld, their fair, rosy skin glowing in the generous light.

At the absolute center of this radiant atmosphere sat Reuben Ashford. At forty-five, the Mafia boss possessed a movie-star handsomeness that commanded the room long before his lethal reputation ever could. He had broad, powerful shoulders that effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face was defined by a high-bridged nose and a sharply defined jaw, shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was swept naturally back, though a few loose strands fell casually across his forehead. His cold, observant eyes missed nothing, taking in the micro-expressions of the capos seated down the long table. Refined artistic tattoos crept across his hands and fingers, flexing slightly as he rested them on the polished table. A small, elegant neck tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

"The perimeter is entirely secure, Mr. Ashford," a senior capo whispered, leaning in close to the boss's chair. "We expect no interruptions."

Reuben slowly turned the heavy family signet ring on his right hand. His deep, low voice rolled through the space, punctuated by deliberate, terrifying pauses.

"Do we consider our own home a fortress, Thomas, or merely a very expensive cage?" Reuben asked.

It was a known, absolute rule of his reign: the boss spoke exclusively in questions.

"A fortress, sir. Airtight," Thomas stammered, his rosy cheeks flushing under the boss's intense scrutiny.

Sitting directly opposite him was his fiancée, Lucinda Vale. At thirty-three, she was a vision of sculpted aristocracy in a satin evening gown that clung flawlessly to her slender frame. Diamond earrings flashed brilliantly against her fair skin, matching the massive engagement ring on her left hand. She offered a courteous, carefully reassuring public smile to the guests.

"You must relax tonight, darling," Lucinda murmured, her American accent dripping with practiced charm. "The evening is an absolute triumph. Everyone is thrilled to celebrate our future."

"Does a grieving man require a celebration, Lucinda, or simply time to sharpen his knives?" Reuben asked, his cold eyes shifting away from her.

He looked toward his seven-year-old son, Jonah, seated quietly at his right. The boy wore a formal dinner jacket, a neatly buttoned shirt, and polished shoes. Jonah was unusually quiet tonight, his eyes darting nervously around the room, entirely refusing to touch his food. Reuben’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. The golden warmth of the room felt suddenly oppressive, and he waited for the dinner service to continue.
