Chapter 7

The sheer, brazen audacity of the statement echoed off the gilded mirrors. It was a callous admission of physical torture, an arrogant attempt to gaslight the room into believing her actions were simply the harsh, necessary realities of maintaining the syndicate's hierarchy.

Nathaniel’s reaction was deliberate, fueled by a cold, terrifying, protective adrenaline.

He lowered the empty black shoe back into the box with a definitive, echoing thud. He moved with absolute, predatory precision, stepping decisively forward. He inserted his broad-shouldered, masculine frame directly into the medium wide space between Celine and Elena.

He placed his body entirely between his fiancée and the trembling housemaid, creating an impenetrable physical shield of authority.

Poppy, confused by the sudden tension and the harsh tone of the woman who usually offered her sweets, stayed close beside Elena on the velvet ottoman. The three-year-old girl reached out, her small fingers gently holding the edge of Elena’s rumpled white apron.

Elena did not retreat. Feeling the solid, unyielding presence of Nathaniel standing protectively in front of her, the paralyzing terror that had gripped her all day finally broke. She remained close beside him, seeking the sanctuary of his shadow. Elena’s hand settled reassuringly on Poppy’s small shoulder, pulling the toddler securely against her side.

Nathaniel held Celine’s gaze. He fixed her with a cold, unwavering stare that promised absolute, undeniable destruction.

"You brought broken glass into a room where my daughter walks," Nathaniel stated, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that shook the crystal glasses on the nearby tables.

"Nathaniel, darling, please," Celine gasped, her chest heaving as she finally realized the catastrophic magnitude of her mistake. "You must understand! It was a matter of discipline! She was overstepping her boundaries! You were encouraging her! I merely needed to assert the proper hierarchy of this household!"

"Does asserting hierarchy require mutilating a woman in front of a three-year-old child?" Nathaniel inquired, his perceptive eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"She is a maid!" Celine shrieked, pointing a shaking, diamond-adorned finger at the space behind Nathaniel, though she shrank back under his lethal glare. "She is nothing! I am the daughter of a king! You cannot humiliate me in front of our families over a meaningless dance!"

"You humiliated yourself the moment you resorted to the tactics of a coward," Nathaniel replied coldly.
