Chapter 4

The cinematic, golden light of the chandeliers seemed to sharpen, focusing entirely on the velvet ottoman and the open shoebox. The air around them was thick with a dangerous, electric gravity. Elena hesitated, her breathing shallow and ragged.
Elena reached out with a trembling hand. She picked up one of the new black flats from the box, holding the smooth leather in her hands. She prepared to slip her foot out of her old shoe, resigning herself to whatever cruel trap was waiting inside.
Celine looked directly at Elena, her polished smile entirely unyielding.
"Try them on. Smile for Christmas," Celine ordered, her American accent dripping with condescending superiority.
Before Elena could bring the shoe down to her foot, three-year-old Poppy leaned forward on the ottoman. The little girl in the forest-green velvet dress pointed delightedly toward the black flat in Elena's hands. Poppy looked up at the trembling maid, her innocent eyes wide with pure, unfiltered excitement.
"Auntie's snow!" Poppy announced, her voice punctuated with little toddler pauses. "In Mommy's shoes!"
The childish, clear words sliced through the ambient noise of the salon with the devastating force of a detonating bomb. The word "Mommy" echoed off the cream marble columns, drawing the immediate, shocked attention of every guest nearby. But it was the mention of the "snow" that made Elena's blood run completely cold.
Simultaneously, the heavy, measured footsteps of Nathaniel Ashford echoed behind them. The mafia boss had been walking toward the Christmas tree to check on his daughter, stepping perfectly into the scene just as the toddler spoke those devastating words.
Nathaniel stopped moving entirely. His broad shoulders went rigid beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He looked at his daughter, processing the cheerful, innocent exclamation. Then, his dark, observant eyes shifted to the black shoe trembling in the housemaid's hand.
He saw Elena's unnatural posture. He saw her rumpled apron, her disheveled hair, and the sheer, paralyzing terror in her expressive eyes.

The realization of the absolute, humiliating betrayal that had occurred in his home cemented itself in his calculating mind.
Nathaniel moved with absolute, predatory grace. He closed the distance across the marble floor in two long strides. He stepped directly beside Elena, his imposing frame casting a protective shadow over the velvet ottoman.
