Chapter 1

The private portrait hall of the Valenti estate was flooded with brilliant, unyielding daylight. Massive skylights filtered the afternoon sun, casting a natural, cinematic illumination across the room that was entirely devoid of any warm, yellow tint. The lighting was crisp, neutral, and flawless, highlighting the stark contrast between the icy white walls and the dark, tailored suits of the men gathered within. White American adults with fair, rosy skin and crisp American accents mingled around the studio equipment. Freestanding family-photo backdrops, padded equipment cases, and a rolling camera cart were meticulously arranged across the polished marble floor.

At the center of the room’s gravity stood Roman Valenti. At forty-one years old, the Head of the Valenti family was breathtakingly handsome, possessing the rugged, chiseled features of a classic movie star. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally slicked back, but a few loose strands fell effortlessly over his high-bridged nose, giving him a charming, almost romantic look that deeply contrasted with the lethal nature of his profession. He wore a dark, tailored three-piece suit, the dress shirt unbuttoned at the chest to reveal glimpses of fair skin and the edges of refined, artistic tattoos. Those same sharp, meticulously designed tattoos wrapped around his hands and fingers, utilizing enough negative space to appear elegant rather than dense.

"The shipments from the northern docks are secure, Boss," a broad-shouldered capo named Vincent reported, his voice low over the polite chatter of the room. "The port authority signed off twenty minutes ago."

"Good," Roman replied. He spoke incredibly slowly, his voice a low, vibrating baritone that commanded immediate obedience. "Ensure the harbor master... receives his usual... compensation. We leave... no loose ends."

"Understood, Roman. The family portrait is scheduled to begin in five minutes. Adrian is just setting up the main lighting array," Vincent said, nodding toward the photographer.

Roman offered a slow, measured nod, his cold, intimidating eyes scanning the room. He took a sip from his crystal glass of sparkling water, his heavy family signet ring clinking softly against the glass. He turned his gaze toward the grand staircase, expecting to see his four-year-old daughter running toward him.

Instead, he saw her huddled on an upholstered stool near the corner of the room.

Maisie Valenti was wearing an elegant, pale pink family-party dress, a white cardigan, and tiny, polished flats. Her fair, rosy cheeks were stained with fresh tears. But what made Roman’s blood turn to absolute ice was the accessory on her face. Sitting perfectly still, weeping silently into her hands, his four-year-old daughter was wearing a pair of oversized, dark sunglasses indoors.

"Vincent," Roman murmured, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly quiet whisper that caused the capo to instantly stiffen. "Clear the immediate area... around my daughter. Now."

"Right away, Boss," Vincent said, waving two bodyguards over to gently push the mingling relatives back.

Roman handed his glass to a passing waiter. He did not run, but his long, purposeful strides devoured the distance across the marble floor. His sharply defined jawline locked into a rigid mask of stone. The romantic charm of his loose hair vanished beneath the predatory, deeply masculine aura of a veteran Mafia Boss realizing his blood had been compromised.
