Chapter 5

The bright, airy colors of the dining room felt entirely surreal against the dark, violent confrontation unfolding at the head of the table. Alexander stood as an immovable barrier between the freezing housemaid and the wealthy socialite. The guests remained absolutely paralyzed, terrified to make a single sound.
Vivienne looked directly up at him. Her sculpted satin evening gown seemed to offer no armor against his penetrating stare. The fair, rosy flush on her skin deepened into an angry, defensive crimson. She realized that lying was no longer an option. The only path forward was to justify her cruelty by asserting her dominance over the household.
“Until she learned her place,” Vivienne stated, her American accent sharp and unyielding.
She raised her chin, her diamond earrings catching the light. Her polite smile tightened into a harsh, defensive curve. She was attempting to project the authority of a Mafia matriarch, entirely misunderstanding the fundamental rules of the man she was engaged to marry.
"What place is that, Vivienne?" Alexander asked. The measured pause before her name sounded like the click of a gun's hammer. "The place where my staff are tortured in my own home?"
"She overstepped her boundaries, Alexander!" Vivienne argued, her voice rising slightly. "She is a servant! She forgets who she is! I simply provided a harsh reminder so that she would not make the same mistake again."
"Did you believe that wearing my ring granted you the authority to act as an executioner?" Alexander inquired, his deep voice carrying a terrifying acoustic weight. "Did you assume that my wealth gave you the right to freeze a woman to death over a perceived slight?"
"I wasn't going to kill her!" Vivienne shot back, her hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table. "I left her in there for twenty minutes! Just long enough to break her arrogance! She needs to understand that I am the lady of this house now!"
"Are you?" Alexander asked.
The two words hung in the air, dripping with absolute, lethal finality.

Beside Alexander, sitting quietly in his velvet chair, little Oliver watched the exchange with wide, terrified eyes. The four-year-old boy possessed fair, rosy skin that was currently pale with anxiety. He knew exactly why Nora had been locked in the cold room. He had been the catalyst.
Unable to bear the tension any longer, Oliver reached out. His small, trembling hand reached past his pristine porcelain plate and gently tugged on the crisp white sleeve of Alexander’s dress shirt, seeking his father's attention in the midst of the storm.
