Chapter 10

The private study of the Whitmore estate was a sanctuary of warm, luminous colors. A massive stone fireplace dominated one wall, a roaring fire casting a gentle, dancing golden glow across the rich leather furniture and heavy mahogany bookshelves. The room was bright, clear, and perfectly inviting.
Nora sat on a plush leather sofa, the intense heat from the flames finally driving the last remnants of the freezer's chill from her bones. She was still wearing Alexander’s tailored suit jacket over her sophisticated black maid dress. Beside her, Oliver was curled up, his head resting heavily against her arm, fast asleep. The events of the evening had completely exhausted the four-year-old.
Alexander stood near the fireplace, holding a crystal glass of amber liquid. The sleeves of his dress shirt were rolled up, revealing more of the refined artistic tattoos on his forearms. He watched the sleeping boy and the beautiful woman who protected him, his angular face softened by the firelight.
"Is he finally asleep?" Alexander asked quietly.
"He is," Nora smiled softly, gently stroking the boy's wavy hair. "He has a very kind heart. He just wants to be loved."
"Do you think he is the only one in this house who wants that?" Alexander asked, his perceptive eyes locking onto hers.
Nora’s breath hitched. The question was loaded with a sudden, intense vulnerability that caught her completely off guard. She looked into his cold, sharp eyes and saw the profound loneliness of a man who had built an empire but had no one to share it with.
"No," Nora whispered. "I don't think he is."
Alexander took a slow sip of his drink, his gaze never leaving her face. The silence between them was comfortable, stripped of the terrifying tension that had gripped the dining hall.
"Will you stay with us, Nora?" Alexander asked, the finality of the question ringing clearly in the quiet room. "Will you allow me to protect you, as you protect him?"
Nora looked down at the sleeping boy, and then back up at the powerful, handsome Mafia boss who had burned his own wedding down to keep her safe. The future was incredibly uncertain. The Shaw family would undoubtedly retaliate. There would be violence, political fallout, and danger. But sitting by the fire, wrapped in his jacket, Nora had never felt safer in her entire life.
"Are you sure you want me to stay?" Nora asked, offering her own question in return.
A slow, devastatingly handsome smile finally broke across Alexander’s face, changing his entire demeanor.

"Have I ever been unsure of anything?" Alexander asked.
The fire crackled loudly, casting a warm, golden light over the new family forged in the ashes of the old. The war outside the mansion walls was inevitable, but inside, under the watchful, perceptive eyes of the boss, the sanctuary was absolute.
