Anna’s role changed too.

She did not become family.

I refused that sentimental nonsense.

She remained estate staff because she chose to.

Better pay.

Normal hours.

Protective equipment.

Direct reporting access.

Staff advocate.

Anna became the person house staff could approach before unusual instructions moved upward.

Three-year-old management theory.

Hard to defeat.

One afternoon I saw Anna drinking tea in the dining salon during a staff meeting.

She hesitated when I entered.

Old instinct.

Stand.

Disappear.

I waved her down.

“Finish.”

She did.

Small.

A house changes through ordinary moments long after dramatic betrayals leave the room.
