Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured over the sprawling garden terrace in a wash of pure, cinematic brilliance. There was no hazy, artificial yellow tint to the daylight; the sky was a piercing, vibrant blue that made the lush, manicured green hedges and pristine white canopies pop with vivid intensity. Dozens of guests, all white American adults bearing fair and rosy complexions, mingled freely. Their American accents blended into a low, sophisticated hum of conversation, punctuated by the clinking of crystal champagne flutes. This was the engagement party of the season, an extravagant celebration meant to merge two powerful worlds. At the edge of the terrace stood a long, heavy dessert table, draped in immaculate white linen and laden with towering pastries, tiered cakes, and gleaming silver platters.

Victoria Hale moved through the vibrant crowd with the practiced, arrogant grace of a woman who believed she had finally secured her throne. At thirty-five, her fair, rosy skin was flawless, accentuated by an elegant formal dress that hugged her slender figure. A heavy, flawless diamond engagement ring sparkled on her left hand, catching the bright natural light.

"The weather is absolutely perfect today, Victoria," a wealthy associate’s wife remarked, smiling brightly as she approached. "You must be thrilled. Raffaele is quite the catch."

"Thank you, Patricia," Victoria replied, her voice smooth and brimming with confidence. "It has been a whirlwind, but everything is falling into place exactly as it should. We are very blessed."

"And the children? Are they getting along?" Patricia asked, gesturing toward the children's seating area near the dessert table.

Victoria’s smile tightened for a fraction of a second, though she quickly recovered her poised facade. "Oh, there are growing pains, of course. But they will learn the new dynamic soon enough. I will make sure of it."

A few yards away, nine-year-old Sophie, Victoria's daughter, stood in her elegant party dress and matching flats. Her rosy cheeks were flushed as she looked around for a place to sit with her plate of cake. Approaching the same small table was three-year-old Noah Marconi. He was dressed impeccably in an elegant child’s party outfit, complete with tiny, polished dress shoes. His fair skin and dark hair were a perfect miniature mirror of his father. Noah reached his small hand out, preparing to climb onto the last available chair at the children’s table.

Victoria excused herself from the adults and walked briskly toward the children. Her eyes narrowed as she watched the three-year-old boy. She did not see a son; she saw an obstacle.

"Move aside, Noah," Victoria commanded, her tone abruptly dropping its pleasant warmth.

Before the little boy could even register her words, Victoria reached out and yanked the small wooden chair away from the table. She quickly slid it over to her own daughter.

"Here you go, Sophie," Victoria cooed sweetly to the nine-year-old. "Sit down and enjoy your cake, sweetheart. You look so beautiful today."

Noah stood frozen, his lower lip quivering slightly as he looked at the empty space where his chair had been. He blinked his wide blue eyes, taking a tentative step forward to try and find another place to sit. When Noah reached for the edge of the table, Victoria’s composure slipped into outright malice. She grabbed the three-year-old violently by his small shoulder. With a harsh, unyielding shove, she pushed the little boy backward, sending him stumbling directly toward the long dessert table.

"What are you doing?" Victoria hissed, her voice cold, vicious, and quiet enough that the nearby adults wouldn't hear. "Sophie sits with family. You help the staff."
