Chapter 9

The sheer humiliation of Adrian's proposition struck Silvio harder than a physical blow. To be spared not out of mercy, but out of absolute, dismissive contempt, was a death sentence in the underworld. His reputation would be shattered, his authority among his own men evaporated in an instant.
"You're making a mistake," Silvio sneered, though the tremor in his voice betrayed his crumbling resolve. "You let me walk out of here, I'll come back with an army."
"Will you have an army left when they learn you surrendered to a cripple?" Adrian asked, his deep voice laced with a lethal calmness. He gestured slightly with the barrel of his pistol toward the door. "Will you take your men and leave my club, Silvio, or shall I have Carlo decorate the alley with your remains?"
Silvio stared into Adrian's cold, observant eyes and found absolutely no hesitation, no fear. He swallowed hard, the fight draining entirely from his posture. He gave a sharp, jerky nod to his two enforcers. They slowly lowered their hands away from their weapons, stepping back.
"This isn't over, Moretti," Silvio promised weakly, turning toward the door.
"Is anything in our world ever truly over?" Adrian asked as Silvio and his men walked past Carlo and out of the VIP room, fleeing the club and the catastrophic failure of their coup.
As the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, the atmosphere in the room shifted. The immediate threat of the rival boss was gone, leaving only the internal rot to be dealt with. Victor remained kneeling on the floor, shaking violently, weeping into his hands.
Adrian slowly engaged the safety on his pistol and slipped it back into the inner pocket of his tailored suit. He looked down at his nephew, the last remnants of familial tolerance extinguishing in his chest.
"Carlo," Adrian said quietly. "Will you take Victor to the warehouse on the docks?"
Victor’s head snapped up, his face twisted in sheer terror. "No! Uncle, please! I'm family! You can't kill family!"
"Did you remember we were family when you gave the order to have my car ambushed?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "Did you think of our blood when you raised your hand to strike me?"
"I was wrong!" Victor screamed as Carlo and the other capo grabbed him by the arms, hauling him to his feet. "I'll leave the city! You'll never see me again!"
"Will I ever have to worry about you again?" Adrian asked, turning his wheelchair away as the men dragged his screaming nephew out of the room. The sounds of Victor's desperate pleas faded down the hallway, leaving Adrian and Elena alone in the quiet, smoke-filled room.
Adrian sat in silence for a long moment, the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly ebbing away. His injured right arm throbbed painfully in its sling, a stark reminder of the physical cost of his reign. He let out a slow, controlled breath, closing his eyes.

"Mr. Moretti?" a soft, gentle voice broke the silence.
Adrian opened his eyes. Elena stepped out from the shadows, her black maid dress immaculate, her posture graceful and poised. She walked slowly toward him, stopping just a few feet away.
