Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling cast a bright, luminous glow across the private dining room of the Moretti club. It was a space designed for power, bathed in a soft, elegant warmth that highlighted the clean whites of the table linens and the natural, rosy skin tones of the gathered elite. There was no muddy orange tint to the light, only clear, gentle golden highlights reflecting off fine porcelain and polished crystal stemware. The air was thick with the scent of expensive cologne and roasted meats, yet beneath the veneer of high society, a dangerous undercurrent pulsed through the room.
Adrian Moretti sat at the head of the table, though his posture spoke of a man temporarily confined rather than defeated. At thirty-eight, he possessed a movie-star handsome face with an angular, sharply defined jaw and neatly trimmed stubble. His swept-back dark hair and the restrained tattoos peeking from his collar and hands hinted at the violent history that had built this empire. Tonight, however, his tailored dark three-piece suit accommodated a medical sling cradling his right arm. The wheelchair he sat in was a glaring testament to the recent ambush he had barely survived.
"The shipments from the docks are delayed again, Adrian," muttered Carlo, an older capo, his fork hovering over his plate. "The men are getting restless. They need to know the leadership is stable."
"Are the men restless, Carlo, or are you projecting your own anxieties?" Adrian asked. His voice was deep, quiet, and perfectly controlled, the measured pauses demanding absolute attention.
Before Carlo could answer, Victor Moretti leaned heavily against the table. At thirty-nine, Victor was Adrian’s nephew—the son of a much older, deceased brother—and the acting manager of the club. He wore an expensive tailored suit and a brass manager badge that caught the light.
"The men just want to know someone is actually in charge, Uncle," Victor said, his tone dripping with a condescending edge. "You’ve been in that chair for weeks. The club needs a firm hand, not a patient in recovery."
"Is my presence here not firm enough for you, Victor?" Adrian inquired, his cold, observant eyes drifting toward the younger man.
From the serving station, Elena Brooks watched the exchange. At twenty-six, the housemaid possessed a breathtaking, cinematic beauty. Her expressive eyes missed nothing, and her dark hair was gathered into a flawless, neat bun. She wore a fitted black maid dress with a cinched waist, a white collar, cuffs, and a white lace maid headband. Her fair, rosy skin paled slightly as she noted the aggressive stance Victor was taking.
"I'll handle the wine, Elena," another server whispered, stepping forward.

"No," Elena replied softly, her voice steady. "I will serve Mr. Moretti. Keep your eyes on the other guests."
She picked up the silver bread basket, her elegant flat shoes making no sound against the polished floor, sensing the precise moment the fragile peace in the room was about to shatter.
