Chapter 6

The close-up held on Lucius’s face. His cold, observant eyes lingered on Octavia’s ring for a brief, calculating moment. He absorbed the sheer malice radiating from the woman across the table, the woman who had terrorized his home and his staff for her own twisted amusement. The rigid lines of his angular face remained unyielding, a silent promise of absolute, uncompromising retribution.
Then, his eyes slowly shifted.
His head followed slightly as his gaze moved from the ring, locking directly onto Octavia's eyes. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, the muscles flexing beneath his extremely short stubble. His mouth settled into a firm line.
He held her gaze in complete, terrifying silence.
The end of the visual prompt suspended the room in this agonizing, freezing silence. The bright, luminous colors of the dining hall felt like a harsh interrogation spotlight, offering Octavia absolutely no place to hide.
"Are you calling my blood a liar in front of the entire commission?" Lucius finally asked.
His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like the heavy toll of a funeral bell.
"Lucius, she is lying!" Octavia shrieked, her voice pitching up into a hysterical, defensive frequency. She pointed a shaking, diamond-clad finger at the little girl. "She is a traumatized child! Her mind is combining memories! She doesn't know what she is saying! The ring was off!"
"Is it customary for a child to invent the specific mechanics of torture to slander her father's fiancée?" Lucius inquired, his cold, perceptive eyes dissecting her false narrative with surgical precision.
"She is confused!" Octavia cried, tears of panic and frustration finally spilling over her fair cheeks, ruining her pristine makeup. "The maid put her up to this! They conspired to ruin this dinner to make me look like a monster in front of your friends! They want me out of this house!"
"Do you believe my daughter is a puppet, manipulated by a woman whose only crime is showing her the warmth you inherently lack?" Lucius asked smoothly.
He didn't wait for her pathetic, scrambling answer. He took a slow, deliberate step toward the center of the table. The refined artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as he rested his palms on the polished walnut wood.

"Did you truly believe you could torture my staff, terrorize my heir, and seamlessly ascend to my side without consequence?" Lucius questioned, his voice dropping into a register of pure, concentrated ice.
Octavia opened her mouth, her breath catching audibly in the quiet room. She looked at the towering, deeply masculine Mafia boss, realizing that the formidable intellect she had so arrogantly underestimated had just trapped her perfectly. The trap had been sprung, and there was no escape.
