Chapter 1

The engagement dinner was a spectacle of absolute, terrifying perfection. The grand dining hall of the Kincaid estate was bathed in a bright, airy luminance that defied the violent reality of the men seated at the tables. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung from the soaring ceiling, casting a soft, elegant golden light across carved ivory-paneled walls and intricate gilded ceiling moldings. The room felt entirely fresh, a carefully curated illusion of untouchable wealth. Tall ivory candles burned steadily inside heavy silver candelabras, their flickering flames reflecting off polished walnut tables, gold-rimmed porcelain plates, and sparkling crystal stemware. The air was heavy with the scent of white roses and the quiet, measured conversations of the most dangerous white American crime families on the eastern seaboard.
At the center of this radiant atmosphere stood Lucius Kincaid. At forty-four, the Mafia boss possessed a movie-star-handsome masculinity that commanded the absolute attention of the room. His broad, powerful shoulders stretched the fabric of an impeccably tailored dark three-piece suit. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was swept naturally back, though a few loose strands fell casually near his forehead. His cold, observant eyes missed nothing. Refined artistic tattoos stretched across his hands and fingers with generous spacing, and a small, intricate neck tattoo peeked above his crisp white collar. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand, catching the golden light alongside his polished leather shoes.
Beside him stood Octavia Wells, his thirty-two-year-old fiancée. She was a vision of sculpted perfection in a satin evening gown that clung flawlessly to her fair, rosy skin. Diamond earrings swung gently from her lobes, catching the chandelier light, perfectly matching the massive engagement ring on her left hand. She offered a courteous, practiced smile to a passing underboss, though beneath her polished exterior lurked an impatient, driving need to control every facet of the Kincaid household.
"The evening is a complete triumph, darling," Octavia murmured, turning her smile toward Lucius, her American accent crisp and sophisticated. "Our guests are thoroughly impressed by the new arrangements. Everything feels so much lighter now, don't you think?"
Lucius’s cold eyes shifted from the crowded dining tables to his fiancée’s flawless face. He did not smile. His voice, when he spoke, was deep, quiet, and possessed a terrifying gravity.
"Do you believe a few white roses can alter the foundation of this house, Octavia?"
His dialogue consisted exclusively of questions, a long-standing habit that unnerved even his most hardened lieutenants. It forced the listener into a constant state of defense.

"They certainly set a better tone for our future," Octavia replied, her smile tightening marginally. "We are moving forward, Lucius. A fresh start requires a fresh aesthetic. We simply must ensure that everyone understands their proper place."
"Is a fresh start synonymous with forced compliance?" Lucius inquired, his gaze slowly drifting away from her. He looked toward his six-year-old daughter, Penny, who sat quietly in her champagne velvet chair, looking small and fragile in her elegant party dress. The girl's fair, rosy skin was pale, her eyes wide and observant. Lucius's jaw tightened imperceptibly as the golden light illuminated the small child.
