Chapter 7

The journey through the opulent corridors of the mansion was a blur of frantic activity. Tactical enforcers, dressed in dark combat gear, were rapidly taking up positions by every window and entrance, transforming the luxurious estate into an impenetrable fortress. The warm, festive lights of Christmas Eve felt entirely out of place against the cold, metallic reality of weapons being loaded and radios crackling with secure comms.

Elias did not let go of Vera’s hand. He guided her through the chaos with a calm, absolute authority, his presence alone parting the sea of armed men. They reached the heavy oak doors of his private study located deep within the secure interior of the mansion.

He pushed the doors open and ushered her inside, locking the deadbolt behind them. The study was a sanctuary of dark wood, leather bindings, and soft, amber lighting. It was quiet here, insulated from the frantic preparations outside.

"Sit," Elias commanded gently, gesturing toward a plush leather sofa near a crackling fireplace.

Vera complied, her legs feeling shaky. The adrenaline of the evening was finally wearing off, leaving her exhausted and hyper-aware of the life growing inside her. She smoothed the skirt of her black maid dress, feeling entirely out of place in the inner sanctum of the mafia boss.

Elias walked over to a crystal decanter on his desk, pouring a small measure of amber liquid into a glass, but he didn't offer her any, remembering her condition. He drank it quickly, the burn settling his nerves, before walking over to join her.

He didn't sit in the armchair opposite her. Instead, he sat directly beside her on the sofa, his broad shoulders encroaching on her personal space in a way that felt both terrifying and deeply comforting.

"Are you experiencing any pain from the incident on the stairs?" Elias asked, his dark eyes scanning her posture with clinical intensity. "I will have the private physician brought here immediately if you need him."

"I am fine, Elias," Vera assured him softly. "My shoulder aches from catching the railing, but there is no bleeding. The baby is safe."

Elias let out a long, slow breath, running a hand through his swept-back dark hair. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, staring into the flickering flames of the fireplace.

"Do you comprehend the magnitude of what is about to happen?" Elias asked quietly. "The Cross family is powerful. They will not accept Delia's imprisonment. They will demand her release, and when I refuse, they will attempt to take this estate by force."

"Did I cause a war?" Vera whispered, her expressive eyes filling with guilt. "If I had just left the estate when I found out I was pregnant..."

"Would leaving have protected you from a woman who wanted you dead simply for existing?" Elias interrupted, turning his head to look at her fiercely. "Do you think I would have allowed you to disappear if I had known you carried my child?"

"I didn't want to ruin your alliance," she confessed, looking down at her hands.

"Is an alliance built on the blood of my family worth keeping?" Elias asked, reaching out to gently cover her hands with his own. "You did not cause a war, Vera. You simply forced me to see the snakes I allowed into my house."

He shifted closer, his tattooed fingers gently lifting her chin so she was forced to meet his gaze.

"You are no longer a maid in this house," Elias stated, his voice a low, magnetic rumble that left no room for argument. "You are the mother of my child. You are under my absolute protection. Do you understand what that means?"

"It means I can never leave," Vera whispered, realizing the gilded cage had just locked firmly shut around her, though she found, to her surprise, she didn't want the key.

"It means you will never have to run again," Elias corrected softly.

He leaned in, the distance between them vanishing entirely. His lips met hers in a gentle, exploring kiss that quickly deepened, fueled by the sheer terror and relief of the evening. It was a promise, sealed in the quiet darkness of the study, before the storm broke outside.
