Chapter 6

The grand dining hall, with its crystal glasses and untouched gold-rimmed porcelain, felt like a museum exhibit of a life that had just violently ended. Elias walked slowly back to where Vera knelt on the marble floor. He dropped to one knee, completely ignoring the expensive fabric of his trousers, bringing himself down to eye level with his son and the woman carrying his unborn child.

"Are you unharmed, Noah?" Elias asked, his deep voice softening remarkably, losing the lethal edge it had carried moments before. He reached out, his tattooed hand resting gently on the boy's small back.

Noah sniffled, pulling his face away from Vera's shoulder. He looked at his father, his eyes red. "She was bad, Daddy. She was going to hurt Mommy."

"I know, son," Elias murmured, pulling the boy into a fierce, protective embrace. "She will never be allowed near you, or Vera, ever again. Do you understand?"

Noah nodded against his father's chest. He pulled away slightly, reaching into his pocket, and produced the tiny red knitted Christmas stocking again. He offered it to Elias this time.

"It's for the baby," Noah said softly. "I asked the nanny to help me make it."

Elias took the tiny stocking, his large, masculine hands dwarfing the fragile yarn. He stared at it, the physical reality of the child growing inside Vera hitting him with staggering force. He looked up at Vera, his observant eyes searching her delicate features.

"Why didn't you tell me, Vera?" Elias asked quietly. The question carried no anger, only a profound, aching curiosity. "Why did you carry this burden alone for three months?"

Vera swallowed hard, looking down at the white apron covering her lap. "I am a housemaid, Mr. Mercer. You are the head of the syndicate. You were engaged to a woman who brought you armies and territory. What could a pregnant maid offer you besides a scandal?"

"Did I ever treat our time together as a scandal?" Elias asked, his voice a low, intimate rumble that sent a shiver down her spine. "Did I ever look at you as just a maid?"

"No," Vera admitted, fresh tears filling her expressive eyes. "You were kind. You were gentle. But this world is not gentle, Elias. I saw what they do to vulnerabilities. I wanted to protect the baby. I thought if I stayed quiet, if I just faded into the background, we would be safe."

"Is safety found in the shadows, or is it found under my protection?" Elias inquired, reaching out to gently touch her chin, tilting her face up so she was forced to look into his eyes.

"I was afraid," she whispered, leaning into the warmth of his heavily tattooed hand. "When she pushed me... I thought I lost everything."

Elias's jaw tightened at the memory of her near-death. "She will pay for that terror. I swear it."

He stood up smoothly, offering his hand to Vera. She hesitated for only a second before placing her small, pale hand into his grasp. He pulled her to her feet with effortless strength, pulling her slightly closer than strictly necessary.

"Marcus," Elias called out, not looking away from Vera.

The underboss stepped back into the room, his scarred face impassive. "Yes, Boss."

"Have a detail escort Noah to the secure wing. I want four men on his door at all times," Elias ordered. He looked down at his son. "Go with Marcus, Noah. I will come check on you shortly."

"Okay, Daddy," Noah said, grabbing Marcus's massive hand and walking bravely out of the room.

Once the boy was gone, Elias turned his full attention back to Vera. "We cannot stay in this room. The estate will be on lockdown within the hour, and the Cross family will likely retaliate before dawn once they realize Delia is missing."

"Where are we going?" Vera asked, her heart racing as she realized the true scope of the war that was about to ignite.

"To my study," Elias replied, keeping her hand firmly in his. "We have preparations to make, and you are not leaving my sight."
