Chapter 14

Silas asked to speak to Micah.

Micah said no.

Two months later, still no.

Four months later:

“Yes. Ten minutes.”

His terms.

I stayed outside.

Elena stayed nearby.

Silas entered without a suit jacket.

Interesting.

Less armor.

Micah stood.

Did not hug him.

Silas began:

“I thought I was protecting your future.”

Micah stopped him.

“No.”

Good.

Silas looked surprised.

“You were protecting yours.”

Silence.

Sixteen years old.

Clearer than most capos.

“You paid for boxing.”

“Yes.”

“Thanks.”

Silas blinked.

Micah continued.

“But you don’t own it.”

“No.”

“You told people I’d lead.”

“Yes.”

“I never said that.”

“I know.”

“And you kept my mom.”

Silas’s face broke.

“Yes.”

Micah looked at him for a long time.

“Why?”

Silas tried ideology.

Balance.

Family.

Future.

Micah shook his head.

“Why did you?”

That forced the real answer.

Silas whispered:

“I wanted to matter.”

There.

Finally.

Not continuity.

Not Rossi.

Him.

Micah nodded.

“I mattered too.”

Silas cried.

Not loudly.

Enough.

Micah did not comfort him.

Correct.

“You made my life about helping yours.”

Silence.

“I’m done.”

He walked out before ten minutes.

No forgiveness.

No threat.

Just exit.

For someone Silas spent years preparing to control, Micah choosing when the conversation ended was probably the most important consequence of all.
