Chapter 13

Elena struggled with ordinary rooms.

That was the part nobody saw.

She hated closed storage spaces.

Could not stand carts rolling behind her.

The smell of fondant made her nauseous after the cake.

Tessa apologized every time they crossed paths.

Elena finally stopped her.

“You didn’t put me in there.”

“I built it.”

“You built a cake.”

Tessa looked down.

“Still.”

Elena touched her arm.

“Then help me ruin it.”

Tessa stared.

The next morning, they dismantled the hollow bottom tier together.

No ceremony.

Foam supports.

Wooden frame.

Fabric straps.

Plastic panels.

Piece by piece.

Micah joined.

Then Nora.

I watched from the doorway.

Nora claimed one piece of foam and drew a face on it.

Of course.

Trauma meets preschool art.

Elena laughed.

That sound mattered.

The hidden cavity became garbage within an hour.

No shrine.

No dramatic burning.

Just materials.

Ordinary again.

Tessa saved one small sugar flower from the upper cake and gave it to Elena.

“Better part.”

Elena smiled.

“Yes.”
