Chapter 5

The standoff beside the Christmas tree hung in the bright, golden air. The air around them was thick with a dangerous, electric gravity. Audrey stood paralyzed, the glossy, torn edges of the photograph digging into her palms.
Before Brielle could snatch the photograph from the maid's hands, three-year-old Noah stepped forward. The little boy in the cream knitted sweater moved with bright, innocent determination. He completely ignored the towering, intimidating presence of his future stepmother.
Noah pointed a tiny, chubby finger directly at the torn pieces of glossy paper hidden in Audrey's hand.
He then tilted his head back, his soft curls brushing his forehead, and looked up with innocent expectation. He wasn't looking at Brielle. He was looking at the man who had just arrived silently behind her.
Miles Ashford stepped perfectly into the medium wide space, his broad-shouldered, masculine frame casting a protective shadow over the scene.
"Auntie tore Mommy," Noah announced, his voice carrying the clear, flawless honesty of a child. He looked up at Miles, entirely confident that his father could fix any broken thing in the world. "Glue, Daddy?"
The childish, clear American accent sliced through the ambient noise of the reception with the devastating force of a detonating bomb. The word "Mommy" echoed off the gilded mirrors, drawing the immediate, shocked attention of every guest standing nearby.
But it was the horrifying context of the destruction that made the blood run completely cold in the veins of those who understood what they were looking at.
Miles Ashford stopped moving entirely. His entire body went rigid beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He looked at his toddler son, processing the innocent, devastating request for glue. Then, his dark, observant eyes shifted to the object trembling in the housemaid's hands.
He saw the glossy paper. He saw the torn edges.
Then, his gaze moved to Audrey's face. He saw her unnatural posture, her rumpled apron, and her crooked headband. He saw the disheveled strands of her hair, and the sheer, paralyzing terror in her clear, expressive eyes.

The realization of the absolute, humiliating violence and psychological torture that had occurred in his home cemented itself in his calculating mind.
Miles moved with absolute, predatory grace. He closed the distance across the marble floor in a single, fluid stride. He stepped immediately between Brielle and Audrey. He placed his body entirely in front of the housemaid and his son, creating an impenetrable physical shield of masculine authority.
