Chapter 10

The final echoing gunshot rang out, and then a heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the ruined mansion. The smoke hung thick in the air, illuminated only by the surviving fairy lights on the battered Christmas tree.

"Status, Silas?" Alaric asked, his voice rough as he ejected a spent magazine.

"Area clear, Boss," Silas coughed, stepping over a fallen body. "All hostiles neutralized. We held the house."

"Check the perimeter. Make sure no one slipped through," Alaric commanded, dropping the heavy rifle and drawing his sidearm. "I am going upstairs to check on Nora and Lucy."

Alaric moved quickly through the darkened corridors, stepping over shattered glass and broken marble. He reached the third floor, his heart hammering with a rare, unfamiliar anxiety. He punched the access code into the keypad of the secure wing.

The heavy steel door slid open with a hiss.

Nora scrambled to her feet, holding Lucy tightly in her arms. She looked at Alaric, taking in his tailored suit dusted with plaster and ash, and the blood splattered across his crisp white collar.

"Are you hurt?" Nora gasped, rushing forward without thinking.

"I am perfectly fine," Alaric said, his angular face softening completely as he looked at the beautiful maid and his uninjured daughter. He holstered his weapon and reached out, wrapping his strong, tattooed arms around both of them, pulling them into a fierce, protective embrace.

Lucy buried her face in his neck, and Nora rested her head against his broad shoulder, completely exhausted.

"You saved us," Nora whispered into the fabric of his suit.

"You saved me first," Alaric replied, his deep voice vibrating against her chest. He pulled back slightly, looking deeply into her expressive eyes. "Your life as a maid is over, Nora. You will have everything you could ever desire in this world."

Before Nora could process the magnitude of his promise, Silas's voice crackled urgently over the earpiece.

"Boss, we have a major problem," Silas said, panic lacing his usually calm voice.

"What is it?" Alaric demanded, his lethal edge instantly returning.

"The men we just killed... they aren't Vivian's family," Silas reported. "They're wearing the crest of the Russian syndicate. Vivian didn't just try to poison you; she sold us out to the Bratva."

Alaric’s jaw locked. The war wasn't over. It had only just begun. He looked at Nora, his eyes burning with an unyielding, protective fire.

"Stay here," Alaric ordered, turning back toward the burning ruins of his mansion, ready to face the real monster in the dark.
