Chapter 5

The opulent grand ballroom was suffocatingly quiet. The ivory candles burning in their ornate brass candelabras seemed to cast harsh, judgmental shadows over Cassandra’s champagne satin gown. The polished, reassuring smile that usually charmed the syndicate members had begun to fracture, leaving behind the faint, terrifying cracks of cornered panic.

Lila felt the crushing weight of fifty gazes, but the only eyes that mattered were the ones burning into hers. The mafia boss’s dark, intense stare was demanding absolute honesty. She knew that answering this question would either save her life or seal her death warrant.

Tears gathered heavily along Lila’s lower eyelids, making her highly expressive eyes shine brilliantly in the golden light. She steadied a trembling breath, refusing to look away from the man whose child she carried.

"Yours," Lila answered, her voice incredibly quiet, yet carrying a devastating, undeniable truth that sliced through the silent room. "Cassandra made me hide it."

The devastating confession dropped onto the polished marble floor like toxic acid. Murmurs of absolute shock and outrage rippled through the syndicate members. The room was suddenly paralyzed. The woman destined to be the queen of the Cross syndicate had just been publicly accused of attempting to discard the boss's own flesh and blood, and threatening a household servant to achieve her political goals.

"That is an outrageous lie!" Cassandra shouted, stepping forward, her ruby earrings swinging wildly. The aristocratic polish was completely gone. "She is a lying whore trying to ruin our evening, Everett! I have never touched her! She is trying to turn you against me to extort this family!"

Cassandra’s eyes briefly flicked down toward three-year-old Owen, calculating the political damage of the moment, before returning to Everett. The last remnants of her careful, polished smile faded entirely. She lifted her chin, attempting to project an aura of untouchable aristocratic defiance, believing her family's power could still shield her from his wrath.

"Your heir deserves a better mother," Cassandra stated coldly, her voice dropping into a ruthless, uncompromising tone.

She had not denied the accusation; she had merely attempted to justify it as a necessary political maneuver, brushing off the psychological torture of a pregnant woman as a mundane necessity for the syndicate's image.

Everett did not yell. He did not explode into physical violence. The quiet, deep, controlled manner in which he operated was far more terrifying than any shouted threat. He moved with preternatural speed, stepping smoothly into the space to position his broad, masculine body deliberately between Cassandra and Lila.

It was an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection. Everett stood firmly between them, a physical shield of tailored dark wool.

Moving with profound, measured grace, Everett reached out. He gently covered Lila’s protective, trembling hand—the one resting against her rumpled apron—with his own heavily tattooed hand. The artistic negative space designs stood out starkly against her pale skin.

Owen stayed close beside Lila, looking up at his father with wide, trusting eyes.

Lila’s tense, rigid shoulders eased slightly. The paralyzing terror that had gripped her for months finally began to recede. She was standing behind the apex predator, and he had chosen to defend her.

Everett’s calm, unwavering gaze returned to Cassandra. His sharp, angular jaw was set in stone, his eyes promising absolute ruin.
