Chapter 3

The innocent, toddler-phrased confession shattered the fragile tension surrounding Lila. She hugged Owen tightly, her rosy cheeks flushed with absolute terror. She did not fully understand the cruelty of the adults in the room, but she knew that Cassandra was a viper waiting to strike.

"Owen, sweetie, you have to go play with your toys now," Lila whispered urgently, pressing a trembling kiss to his soft curls. "Go find your blocks."

Before the little boy could respond, the sharp, rhythmic clicking of high heels on the polished marble floor announced the arrival of disaster.

Cassandra Vale stepped out from the crowd of elegantly dressed guests. The luxurious champagne satin of her gown rustled violently as she closed the distance. Her fair, rosy skin was flushed with a sudden, calculated malice. Without a word, Cassandra’s manicured fingers clamped down around the delicate stem of her champagne flute.

Lila gasped, standing up quickly, instinctively keeping a protective hand pressed against her rumpled white apron and the small bump beneath it.

"What do you think you are doing down here?" Cassandra hissed, her voice a venomous, barely audible whisper that carried the sharp, clipped tones of her American accent.

"I was just checking on Owen," Lila pleaded, her expressive eyes wide with terror as she took a cautious step backward.

"I told you to stay out of the grand ballroom," Cassandra spat, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. The polished, public smile was entirely gone, replaced by a mask of feral desperation. "You are completely insane if you think you can walk into this reception looking like a vagrant, carrying a bastard child, and speak to my fiancé's son."

"He came to me, Cassandra," Lila whispered, her voice trembling but laced with a sudden, desperate courage. "And Everett needs to know the truth. You are lying to him. You are lying to the entire syndicate."

Cassandra’s eyes darkened with murderous intent. She leaned in closer, her ruby earrings catching the fairy lights of the Christmas tree.

"Listen to me, you pathetic little servant," Cassandra threatened, her voice shaking with rage. "If you take one more step toward Everett, I will have my family's enforcers drag you out of this mansion tonight. You will disappear. I have already planted the seed. Everyone knows you've been sleeping with the staff."

Lila’s breath hitched. She felt the crushing reality of the mafia hierarchy pressing down on her. Cassandra was right. The rumor mill was already churning.

"You can't keep this a secret forever," Lila argued weakly, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"I only need to keep it a secret until you are gone," Cassandra replied coldly, a victorious, cruel smirk touching her lips. "I am handling it tonight. I am going to make him throw you out."

Before Lila could process the sheer, sociopathic perfection of the plan, Cassandra raised her voice, letting it carry across the room. The transition from whispered threat to public proclamation was terrifyingly swift.

Cassandra turned slightly, making sure she was in the direct line of sight of the towering mafia boss across the room. She gestured dramatically toward Lila’s small bump while looking directly at Everett.

"It really is such a tragedy," Cassandra announced clearly, ensuring the nearby capos heard every word. "The driver’s baby. Such a disappointment."

The ambient noise of the nearby conversations suddenly felt muted, distant. A collective, audible gasp erupted from the surrounding guests. The murmurs of the elite syndicate members died instantly. The room was suddenly paralyzed.
