Chapter 4

The words dropped into the immediate vicinity like a live explosive charge. The ambient noise of the crowded Christmas reception died instantly. The clinking of fine porcelain ceased entirely. One by one, every single dinner guest stopped eating and speaking. Fifty of the most dangerous men and women in the city turned their heads, all staring toward the sweeping staircase.

Everett Cross, who had been listening quietly to a lieutenant’s report mere feet away, instantly stopped breathing. The cold, unyielding armor he wore as the mafia boss slipped for a fraction of a second. He turned his head sharply, his dark, sweeping gaze moving from his fiancée's calculated, cruel expression directly to the pregnant, disheveled maid.

The clinking of fine porcelain ceased entirely within his immediate radius, the silence spreading down the long grand ballroom until it consumed the entire space. One by one, every single dinner guest stopped speaking.

Everett did not hesitate for a single microsecond. He moved with preternatural speed, crossing the polished marble floor in three massive, predatory strides. His tailored dark three-piece suit cut a formidable silhouette through the crowded room.

He stopped directly beside Lila. With profound, measured grace, Everett looked down at the trembling woman. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his fingers flexed slightly as he kept his hands at his sides.

He stood up, his broad shoulders casting a massive, imposing shadow over the brilliant Christmas display. He did not look at the elite guests, nor did he look at his polished fiancée standing nearby. He kept his intense, pitch-black eyes locked entirely on the young, trembling woman.

Lila kept a fiercely protective hand pressed flat against her rumpled white apron, shielding her unborn child.

The warm golden light cascading from the chandeliers highlighted the sudden, suffocating tension that had gripped the syndicate. Every guest was completely silent, waiting for the apex predator to strike.

Everett looked directly at Lila, his sharp, angular jaw set in stone. He spoke quietly, his deep voice carrying a lethal, apocalyptic authority that shook the very foundation of the room, yet he explicitly refrained from raising his voice.

"Lila," Everett said softly. "Is that true?"

Before Lila could even open her mouth to answer the terrifying question, a small, cheerful voice broke through the unbearable tension.

Three-year-old Owen, wearing his forest-green reindeer sweater and red velvet overalls, stepped forward. He looked proudly at Everett, entirely oblivious to the lethal syndicate politics swirling around his head. He wanted to share the wonderful secret with his father.

Owen grinned, his round rosy cheeks lifting as his tiny dimples showed. Then, mimicking the threatening instruction he had received earlier, the toddler briefly raised a small, fair finger toward his own lips in a 'shushing' motion.

"Daddy’s baby!" Owen announced cheerfully, his young American accent breaking the silence with natural, adorable little toddler pauses. He kept his finger near his lips. "Auntie says hush."

The devastating impact of the child's truth struck the immediate area like a physical blow. The absolute stillness of Everett Cross sent an immediate, chilling ripple through the grand ballroom. The innocent observation of the child had just brutally translated the crime for everyone in the room. It was not the driver's baby. It was the heir to the Cross syndicate, and the fiancée had actively tried to silence the boy.
