Chapter 2

The ambient hum of the crowded Christmas reception flowed seamlessly around the room, masking the quiet, desperate exhaustion radiating from the young maid. The clinking of crystal glasses and the soft scraping of polished shoes continued across the vast ballroom. Lila paused beside a towering marble column, her fair hands trembling slightly as she rested a protective hand against her rumpled white apron, directly over the small swell of her stomach. Her breath hitched in her chest, a terrifying, anxious flutter that she desperately tried to suppress. She had been working for fourteen hours straight, driven to the point of collapse by Cassandra’s relentless, punishing demands, but the physical labor was nothing compared to the psychological torture the fiancée was currently inflicting.
"Are you quite alright to keep serving, Lila?" a passing guest asked, noting the dark shadows beneath the maid's expressive eyes and her pale complexion.
"I am perfectly fine, sir," Lila whispered, forcing a polite, submissive tone while suppressing a wave of nausea. "Thank you for asking. I just need a moment to catch my breath."
Lila looked across the room. A few feet away, Cassandra stood holding a glass of champagne. The fiancée was holding court with a group of powerful lieutenants, her ruby earrings catching the light. The secret Lila was carrying felt heavier than the marble pillars surrounding them. She was carrying Everett's child, the result of quiet, desperate moments shared in the dark before his political engagement was finalized. She had tried to tell him, but Cassandra had intercepted her. The threat had been absolute and terrifying: stay silent, or face the wrath of the Vale syndicate.
Before she could retreat to the kitchens, a small, cheerful voice broke through the unbearable tension.
Three-year-old Owen Cross stepped out from behind a carved walnut chair. The toddler was a vision of innocence, with round rosy cheeks, soft curls, and tiny dimples. He was dressed impeccably for the holiday in a forest-green reindeer sweater, red velvet overalls, and little brown boots.
Owen approached Lila, completely oblivious to the dangerous syndicate politics swirling around them. He walked proudly, his small hands reaching up to grasp the fabric of her black maternity-cut dress. He had overheard the secret, and in his innocent mind, it was the most wonderful news in the world.
"Mommy Lila!" Owen announced cheerfully, his young American accent breaking the silence with natural, adorable toddler pauses. He hugged her leg tightly. "You have a baby!"
"Oh, Owen, hush," Lila whispered frantically, dropping to her knees despite the aching in her back. She gently cupped the boy's rosy cheeks, her expressive eyes darting around the room to see who had heard. "We talked about this, sweetie. You have to keep your voice down."
"But I want to tell Daddy," Owen pouted, his little dimples deepening. "Daddy likes babies."
"I know he does, sweetheart," Lila said, her voice cracking with suppressed tears. "But you can't tell him yet. It's a secret."

"Auntie Cassandra said it's a bad secret," Owen murmured, looking down at his little brown boots. "She said I have to hush."
The words dropped into the immediate vicinity like a live explosive charge. Lila's blood ran cold. She pulled the toddler into a fierce, protective embrace, realizing that Cassandra was not just threatening her, but was actively manipulating the mind of the mafia boss's heir. She had to tell Everett tonight. She had to risk everything.
